Johannesburg - A man was killed and another was arrested following a shoot-out with police on Monday after they allegedly robbed a house in Sandown, north of Johannesburg, Gauteng police said.

"It is alleged that a victim [a woman] was confronted by three suspects at her residence,” police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini said.

They pointed a firearm at her and ransacked the house, stealing goods including a cellphone, laptop and cash.

The robbery took place on Linden road at around 08:00, Dlamini said.

The woman managed to press the panic button, which alerted police.

"As the suspects were fleeing from the scene, a shoot-out ensured between them and the police. One suspect was arrested and the second suspect, who was wounded, ran into a nearby complex, collapsed and died," Dlamini said.

The third suspect was still at large.

An unlicensed firearm and cash were recovered at the scene.
