Durban - A Tongaat man and his family are picking up the pieces after their dog Max was bizarrely stolen during a house robbery in the early hours of Monday morning.

A group of men had forced their way into his High Street home until they were confronted by the man’s son.

Richard Govender, 43, said that losing their beloved Max had been the most bitter pill to swallow about the entire ordeal.

“We had been at Sibaya Casino and my son was at home when the whole robbery thing happened.

"They broke the door down and entered the house and they ransacked our entire home. They stole the TV, clothing and even brand new shoes. They entered my son’s room and they tried to steal the TV from inside there as well when they woke him,” he said.

Govender added that his son had then confronted the group who fled on foot, apparently taking the Chihuahua-Jack Russell cross with them.

“I have no idea why they would take Max. The dog is like a child to me. I am hurt and I would be willing to give any amount for the return of the dog; he is like a part of our family. The entire night I haven’t slept and I am still looking for him,” he said.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the robbery had been reported to the police and while preliminary investigations were under way, no arrests had been made.
