A MARITZBURG College matric pupil was named a hero after he rushed to help a pedestrian who had been hit by a taxi.

After coming second in the province for the National Science Olympiad’s life science paper, Dylan Forbes-Wilkinson was chosen to attend the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (Saasta) Focus Week in Gauteng on July 20.

Saasta aims to advance engagement in science, engineering and technology in South Africa.

During the week the group was on a tour of the Cullinan Diamond Mine when disaster struck.

“We were at the mine waiting for the tour to begin when I heard a screeching of brakes behind me,” said Dylan. “I turned and saw a woman lying on the floor and I just ran towards her.”

Dylan said it appeared the taxi driver who had hit the pedestrian had had the sun in his eyes and hit a woman crossing the road.

“There wasn’t much I could do for the woman. I was just trying to calm them both down. The driver was in a panic.”

He said the woman had sustained injuries to one of her hands, but was otherwise fine.

Saasta honoured Dylan for his selfless act and presented him with a Hero Award as well as a wind-up and solar powered radio, in recognition of his community spirit.

“It felt strange getting the award as I don’t really see myself as a hero,” he said humbly. Dylan’s mother Lee Forbes said she was proud of her son for acting so quickly.
