Johannesburg - The search for a young girl who fell into a stormwater drain in Ivory Park will continue on Thursday morning, Johannesburg emergency services said.

"The girl is still missing and the operation is underway to find her," spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said.

The Star named her as Millicent Mampo, 10, from Bonwelong Primary School.

"We have called for reinforcements and Ekurhuleni emergency services will join the search," Mulaudzi said.

On Wednesday, rescue workers searched a 15km stretch of the Kaalspruit stream, which flows through Kaalfontein.

Around 20 emergency officials, eight police officers, and three dogs took part in the search.

The girl fell into the drain on Tuesday afternoon while walking home from school with her friends. Three other children also fell into the water, but were rescued by their classmates.

Im afraid there is very little hope of finding her alive...Where is parental supervision???

Janice, they were walking home from school. It is not always possible for parents to be with their children 24/7 as circumstances often force both parents to work. The point is, that drain should not have been open in the first place. Not the parents' fault that this happened. Let's hope they find her.

There are products available to prevent such tragedies, why do we only catch a wake up when it is too late??? Sad, so sad. If you have children you should look into this product.
