Johannesburg - A hunt is underway for a man who escaped from police custody after appearing in the High Court in Johannesburg, sitting in Palm Ridge, police said on Tuesday.

Vusimuzi Tshepo Genge, 30, escaped at 13:00 on Monday, somewhere between the courtroom and the police vehicle, said Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

Police were investigating a case of escape, and an internal investigation had been launched into the circumstances of Genge's escape, he said.

"The suspect was to stand trial for violent and serious crimes committed in Randfontein and Krugersdorp," said Dlamini.

"These include murder, house robbery, business robbery, hijacking and attempted murder.".

Genge was arrested in August 2010.

The Hawks appealed to the public to come forward with information that may lead to his arrest.

He was 1.9m tall, well-built, and was considered aggressive and dangerous. His last known address was Kagiso, Dlamini said.

"It is believed that he is armed, and members of the public are warned not to confront him but to contact the police when they see him," he said.
