Bloemfontein - Free State police were on Monday are looking for the driver of an EMS vehicle suspected of stealing copper wire.

Spokesperson Captain Stephen Thakeng said police received a tip-off early on Monday morning of copper wire being transported to a house in Phomolong, near Welkom.

"The members responded instantly and on their arrival an emergency medical services vehicle was found parked in the yard."

Thakeng said copper cable was found at the house and burning in a fire.

Cable thieves frequently set fire to cables to burn off the insulation. Two people were found sitting in the EMS vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle was handcuffed, but while the officers were busy with the copper cables he ran away. Two other men also fled the scene.

Thakeng said about 10 kg of copper wire, with an estimated street value of R500, and the EMS vehicle, used to transport patients, were seized.
