Johannesburg - Two hyenas escaped from the Lion Park in Fourways, Johannesburg, on Monday, park management said.

Park manager Earl Smith said the animals bit their way out of their enclosure around 07:00 in misty weather. One of the animals has since been cornered, leaving one hyena on the loose.

"Hyenas have extremely strong jaws and they managed to bite their way out," Smith said.

He said the park was in the process of upgrading the enclosures and had not yet reached the hyena enclosure.

The hyenas, one male and one female, were around three-years-old.

One was later spotted and cornered. "We are waiting for a vet to arrive and dart the animal," Smith said.

The second hyena disappeared into the mist and a search team was dispatched to scour the area.

Smith said anyone who saw the missing hyena should keep their distance and contact the park.

"Hyenas are not usually dangerous but they are skittish animals," he said.

What a load of bollocks that they only escaped at 07h00. We stay adjacent to the Lion Park in Farmall and from 02h00 onwards were constantly awakened by our dogs barking at the two hyena. The animals were twice sighted at our gate on Rietvallei Road. As an update the second hyena has been darted and captured in the Cosmo business park just after 13h00.
