Cape Town - Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande hit out at the DA in the National Assembly on Wednesday for saying that he would not be present to answer questions in the House.

"I am not scared to confront the DA on any matter that relates to the department of higher education," he said while responding to a question posed by DA MP Belinda Bozzoli.

He said it was "unacceptable" for Bozzoli to not check his diary, and issue a statement saying he was not going to answer questions.

In the earlier statement, Biozzoli said it was confirmed in the National Assembly’s Programming Committee that Nzimande would not be present to answer questions allegedly because he'd be out of the country for a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) conference.

"The unsurprisingly absent minister has deemed it fit to abdicate his responsibilities in this regard. It is disgraceful and a slap in the face for the thousands of South African students who desperately need access to higher education that this shortfall is likely to preclude them from next year," she said.

"Throughout this funding crisis minister Nzimande - when not dodging accountability -  has displayed arrogance and disinterest in finding the necessary funding."

Nzimande however was present in the National Assembly on Wednesday.

Khaye Nkwanyana, Nzimande's spokesperson, told Netwerk24 that he had offered his apologies to Unesco.
