Cape Town – Twelve candidates have been shortlisted to fill the vacant position of commissioner at the Independent Electoral Commission.

Notices for nominations for the post were issued by the office of the chief justice on March 20, following the resignation of Raenette Taljaard

A panel led by Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng put together the shortlist earlier this week.

The candidates include Dr Matlodi Steven Mabela, Dr Nomsa Praisy Masuku, Dr Simon Zwelibanzi Mbokazi, Mahmood Sanglay, Nkosikhulule Xhawulengweni Nyembezi, Zola Luxolo Fihlani, Fulufhelo Velda Mphuthi, Gerdileen Taylor, Mokgadi Sylvia Mothapho, Lizeka Noxolo Mda, Tshinyalani Charlotte Mavhungu and Reverend Mautji Eloridge Pataki.

The interviews, which will be open to the media and the public, take place on June 15, at a location still to be decided.

The panel has decided, in the interests of transparency and openness, that any interested party may comment on the candidates.
These comments must reach the office of the chief justice before May 25.

Copies of the candidates’ CVs are due to be published on the office’s website.

Vuma Mashinini, who was a special project adviser to President Jacob Zuma, was recently appointed a commissioner at the IEC.
He filled the vacancy left by chairperson Pansy Tlakula, who resigned last year in the wake of a botched leasing deal.

The chairperson position has not yet been finalised.
