IPID probing Soweto girl's death

2012-10-23 14:28

Johannesburg - An inquest docket has been opened after a girl was shot dead in Braamfischerville, Soweto, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said on Tuesday.

The girl, 11, was hit by a stray bullet when police were chasing a man in the area on Monday, said IPID spokesperson Moses Dlamini.

Police said the man was wanted for malicious damage to property and intimidation, after he allegedly damaged the windows of his girlfriend's home. He also threatened to kill the woman and her mother.

Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said police were called and the woman pointed out the man's home.

"As the police approached the premises, [the] suspect released a dog and jumped over a wall."

Dlamini said a chase ensued and a police officer fired two shots when the man drew his firearm.

The child, playing in the area, was hit by a bullet and she died at the scene.

The man is still being sought.

Basic firearms training, with emphasis on the 'aim straight' bit? Condolences to the victim's family.

Is there actually such a thing as a "stray" bullet? This appears, yet again, to be an instance of poor police training. I appreciate that the suspect ramped up the threat level if he did draw his own weapon - but, for heaven's sake, what were the police thinking of - shooting at him, yet somehow hitting and killing an innocent 11-year-old girl! My heart bleeds for her family....

This is yet again the police covering up for their trigger happy officers incompetence. The story is so far from the truth that it isnt even funny. The Police only opened a case of attempted murder after the accused appeared in court on charges of assault and damages to property cases, that was never investigated by Police coming from 2008 and 2011. The Police had the accussed in custody after I accompanied him to the Police station and at that time there were no attempted murder charges, that after the inccident took place a day prior to the accused handing himself over. The accused in this matter was shot at by Police officers in Prvate clothing and he fleed for his life as this incompetent Police did not Identify themselves. It is so much easier to call the accused person a criminal, that when he doesnt even have a criminal record. "They were supposingly chasing a wanted dangerous criminal" Please tell that to the man on the moon. Im prepared to back up my what Im saying..... Attorney for the Accused appearing in Protea today.
