Illegal Greyhound races 'net millions'

2012-11-16 22:26

Johannesburg - Underground Greyhound racing is on the up in the Eastern and Southern Cape, it was reported on Friday.

The Weekend Post, in the Eastern Cape, reported that dogs, which were frequently abused and starved, were taken in minibus taxis to farms where they were used to hunt down vulnerable or endangered wildlife.

The "taxi hunts" were believed to generate up to R2m in bets on Saturdays, the newspaper reported.

Greyhound racing had been illegal in South Africa since the late 1940s, it wrote.

While proponents of the sport were waiting for a decision by the trade and industry department on whether to lift the ban, animal organisations were united in the fight against the formalisation of the sport.

The King William's Town National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) inspector and volunteer Annette Rademeyer said people saw the dogs only on race day and that "they looked all right".

"They do not see that these animals are kept in tiny cages for most of the day; that they get drugged and abused; that the ones that no longer run are disposed of or abandoned."

However, Shane Brody, who had apparently claimed he used to be involved in the racing industry, told The Weekend Post that if the ban was lifted, controls could be put in place, the industry could be monitored and the public and government would benefit.

"If you look at any activity hard enough for abuse, you will find it," he said.

Can't think why horse racing can be legal but greyhound racing must operate behind closed doors. With the REGIME's thirst for funds as it is one would think they'd jump to get it into the mainstream.

Archaic and barbaric sports for idiots.

      chadjason.wilson - 2012-11-17 06:34

Hugh please answer the question.... are you a vegetarian?

      chadjason.wilson - 2012-11-17 06:36

Sorry Hugh, one more question.... Do you support the death penalty?

      chadjason.wilson - 2012-11-17 11:04

Ok so the thumbs down are for? a) a perceived attack on Hugh b) animal sports is worse than human/ animal slaughter c) none of the above (please give reason)

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-11-20 14:49

Willsowill What kind of stupid question is that?.

  • sandile.filita - 2012-11-17 01:50

abusing them is a problem, but allowing them to race is no crime.

      Aaron Brody - 2014-07-20 21:35

Thank you sandile , there is no proof they are abused , high five comrade

  • Montagnes.Bleues - 2012-11-17 07:07

Next thing you will all want to ban the "KZN buxom maiden naked mud bath races" too. They have dividends running into the Rbillions. Bayete, Amandla ngege! Just ask any leader of the pack of an Nkandla Khaya.

  • faizieishlah.shabalala - 2012-11-17 07:20

Abandoned, drugged & abused and this is just the dogs, never mind the children

  • delish7564 - 2012-11-17 07:30

Other countries have "controls" in place, doesn't prevent these beautiful creatures from being treated appallingly, especially once they are no longer deemed "successful". They are often butchered or hung on fences, it's barbaric, and why......because a human has decided they do not deserve to live when they no longer win! They should do the same to the humans then see how acceptable it is :(

      Adil Smit - 2012-11-17 10:47

That is what happens in Spain.

  • mshiniboys - 2012-11-17 07:43

Let the dogs have fun or ban hunting and killing of any animal in this country.

      Adil Smit - 2012-11-17 10:47

Agree, let dogs have fun with loving families - dogfighting and dog-racing is only fun for men without .....

      delish7564 - 2012-11-17 11:50

In all fairness Adil, greyhounds love to run, but................. :(

      Adil Smit - 2012-11-17 14:28

Of course they should be able to run freely, often because that's what they do.Being locked up, fed performing-enhancing drugs, abused and killed when they don't perform anymore is not part of that. About a year ago a dogfighting ring was exposed in Port Elizabeth as well and now this. There's a FB page - "Real men are kind to animals " - the dogfighting and greyhound-racing crowds won't feel at home there. And there's evidence that cruelty to animals leads to serious crimes against humans as well.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-11-20 14:51

Mshiniboys, Fun, how do you know they are having fun?. Yes. let's ban hunting and killing in this country and some people will have nothing to say here.

I am involved with Greyhound Rescue and this beautiful breed are coming into rescue all the time, broken hips and bones that have had to heel on their own, burns, starving. Where does it all end. I think Mr. Shayne Brody is smoking something when he says that if you look hard enough for abuse you will find it!! It is right here in front of our eyes, don't have to look anywhere, it comes to us. The Government can't control anything - do you think they would know where to begin in controlling Greyhound racing. Illegal racing is carrying on everywhere and in the Free State on racing tracks. Dogs costing thousands of Rands have been imported and WHERE ARE ALL THE SURPLUS PUPPIES SOLD??? Most importantly, no animal should be treated as a 'money machine' they have feelings and need love and care. Greyhounds are one of the most affectionate loving breeds and don't deserve to be treated like this. The mentality of the people who abuse these beautiful dogs is questionable. BAN GREYHOUND RACING!!

      delish7564 - 2012-11-17 09:39

Couldn't agree more Rosemary....they have the gentlest natures and are the fastest couch potatoes on 4 legs :)

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-11-20 14:53

Rosemary.smith.5. You got some thumbs down, probably from the types who don't care to look after their animals.

Unfortunately its in the government Gazette mam

  • Pamela Addison - 2012-11-17 13:39

Absolutely disgusting. i do not agree with lifting the ban, it will only create corrupt dog racing practices and more abused and abandoned animals left for other to look after. The people conducting such races and hunts should face the full force of the law, no more slap on the wrist BS, throw them in jail!

  • maureen.churchill.9 - 2012-11-17 15:03

ssshhhh, listen! Is that SARS knocking on your door?

  • margaret.wilhelm.1 - 2012-11-18 13:50

These dogs suffer hugely and just for human pleasure. Please stop this activity.

  • diane.s.coetzee - 2012-11-19 14:44

horses are sold or put into retirement when they cant race anymore... the dogs on the otherhand are left to starve, abandoned or just plain shot alongside the tracks.... there is no retirement for them or happy ever after, not even a forever home, except in doggy heaven perhaps.... dog racing must remain illegal

      Aaron Brody - 2014-07-20 21:31

Where is your proof Mrs coetzee

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-11-20 14:48

People who use animals for their entertainment should be imprisoned. What happens to these poor dogs when they can't race anymore?. Some people are just plainly disgusting. If you want to race something, use your auntie.
