Polokwane - An illegal initiation school where about 158 initiates were housed has been shut down.

The school, in Ramotshenyadi village near Tzaneen, was shut down on Wednesday evening by the Limpopo Working Committee on Initiation Schools and the Limpopo House of Traditional Leaders.

Some of the initiates were also allegedly underage.

This has added to the 15 illegal schools in the province, which have already been shut down since the beginning of the initiation season.

Chief Kgoshi Malesela Dikgale, chairperson of the Limpopo House of Traditional Leaders, said the 25-year-old principal of the illegal school housed 158 initiates and some were seemingly underage. Members of the community apparently raised the alarm.

Dikgale said the initiates had not been harmed.

"We don’t want this kind of a thing in our communities,” he said.

Mokgadi Malatjie, one of the parents, said her 12-year-old son went to the school without her permission.

She was particularly concerned when she heard the principal was operating illegally.

Another parent, Matseko Lebepe, said: "I heard from others that my 11-year-old son was tricked into going there by people who earned a commission each time they took kids there.”

Another parent, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said her son is 13 years old.

She said culture was important, but if initiation was done without the necessary expertise, it could result in death.
