Illegal miner killed in 'turf war'

Johannesburg - An illegal miner has been shot dead in a disused Aurora mine in Springs, on the East Rand, police said on Tuesday.

Captain Johannes Ramphora said he was killed in an argument between two gangs of illegal miners inside the mine on Monday.

"They were fighting over the turf, as it seems that each group has its [own] turf for digging gold in the mine."

Ramphora said one of the miners, a Zimbabwean, alerted the police. No arrests had been made and the murderers were still sought.

He said police did not arrest the group for illegal mining.

"We want to concentrate on the murder case; if we arrest them for illegal mining we will not find information."

That excuse is a lot of B/S. If they had arrested them all one of them would be "gently" and "forcably" become state witness and exonerated from prosecution. Chances are they were illegal immigrants and we could have gotten rid of them. Now they will just carry on Zama zama-ing until some other catastrophe gets them.
