Illegal miner's body found

2012-09-26 08:42

Johannesburg - The body of an illegal miner who was trapped in an old mine shaft in Durban Deep, in Roodepoort was recovered on Wednesday morning.

"We worked through the night and around 04:00 the body of the miner was found. It had injuries all over the body," said emergency services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.

The illegal miner and four others entered the mine, near Dobsonville, through an unused shaft that had been cordoned off. He was trapped on Thursday. The others got to the surface.

Rescue workers covered a distance of three kilometres underground, but suspended the search on Friday, after 16 hours, because the area they were working in was getting smaller and more unsafe.

At the time, Mulaudzi said the area was dangerous because of falling rocks.

But the search resumed on Monday and the body was recovered on Wednesday morning.

18 Yeas ago I worked at Durban Deep. The place where the illegal miner entered is at the Outcrop shafts. Outcrop entrance can be entered by means of ladder steps down into the underground workings. According to Mining Law the Entrance was suppose to be sealed by means of a slab of cement. What went wrong that people can still get access to the underground workings?

It's just crazy deciding to venture in there....but people do not heed the warnings.....it was his choice...a bad one tho.
