Illegal squatter builds mansion on farm

2012-07-29 09:53

Polokwane – A frustrated Limpopo farmer has turned to the courts in an attempt to get illegal squatters off his property.

reported that illegal squatters had been living on the farm for eight years and that their self-proclaimed leader had even built a swanky double storey face brick house on the farm.

Roelof Joubert said the first squatters came to his farm Dresden near Burgersfort in 2003.

There was no agricultural development on the farm due to the lack of water, but Joubert rented out property to businesses.

Joubert’s complaints with councils and government departments as well as charges with police have come to nothing.

The municipality even supplied services to the squatters.

“Dresden is my family farm and my home and I will protect what is legally mine. I am not a mouse, I am a man,” said Joubert.

      david.s.lewisohn - 2012-07-29 11:12

      Do you mean subtle??

      morne.demeillon - 2012-07-29 11:13

I hope that this guy that owns this big house, will give the squatters some room to live in the house as well.

      scouter.fourone - 2012-07-29 14:46

Why destroy what looks to be quite a decent structure? - get rid of the squatters and keep the development by way compensation......... now that would be a fair outcome, albeit rather unlikely.

  • Muffin_man_can - 2012-07-29 10:13

Burn that mansion to the ground!

Land grabs, its not even governments land. Go ask the San people for permission.

  • vmeiring1 - 2012-07-29 10:29

Wow, I cannot believe this. We need to forward this to the people abroad so they can enlight the people there how one sided corrupt our country is.

  • Vince.York - 2012-07-29 10:34

How many RBillions have been stolen from the RDP and Land Fund allocations among many other state budgets and HOW can the authorities have allowed this to endure for 8 years? Limpopo authorities and police have seriously not been handling their duty diligently it seems.

  • michael.kleber.376 - 2012-07-29 10:41

Move into the house with the squatters leader in other words go squat in his house

  • richard.zanner - 2012-07-29 11:22

Approach court yes but I suspect he is going to have a problem. Should he not have approached the court for an interdict while the house was being built.

      mduduzi.dobo - 2012-07-29 11:35

there are proper procedures to follow not not just invade land.

      imani.exclusives - 2012-07-29 11:46

Purely a legal matter, nothing to do with Blacks or Whites. I agree. Let's not Malema-ise this illegal conduct by squatters

      Lennon Chenga - 2012-07-29 12:18

Agreed guys, this is a pure legal matter!! Even if the farmer didn't approach the courts before the house was built, it's the farmer's land and unless the illegal occupier can dig up his house and plant it somewhere else, he should just be evicted!! He's got some nerve building a house like that without legal rights to that particular piece of land!!

Grateful for what? To share something that's mine? When I bought with my rightful money and is taken from me, THAT is THEFT. Compreende?

  • marleze.baartman - 2012-07-29 11:33

The brainless squatters is being used by the leader who is only there for his own agenda.

  • robynne.els.1 - 2012-07-29 11:35

I'm sorry, maybe I am just ignorant but how is it that any person can take land from any other person and justify it by saying it USED to be theirs? As far as I see it that is how things were done hundreds of years ago but not now! We don't still hang people publicly or stone people anymore! Frankly its pathetic how people will boo hoo about their land and want whites to leave but are quite happy to enjoy the fancy cars, electricity and anything else the white man brought from europe!

      Celest Deetlefs - 2012-07-29 11:40

I agree @robynne.els.1 and isn't BMW and most fancy cars from Europe :))) think they be very upset if we all go back and take what's rightfully belonging to Europe to! :D

      robynne.els.1 - 2012-07-29 11:58

Its just ironic! Can you imagine how I would be laughed at if I walked into cash converters and said I want the ring in the display because somebody stole it from my great grand mother a hundred years ago and therefore it belongs to me! LOL

  • pws69 - 2012-07-29 11:36

after the court case is finished, the farmer will have a double story house free of charge to rent out! :-)

  • pws69 - 2012-07-29 11:45

In response to the black commentors claiming the land belongs to them. Some food for thought. 1. At a stage, there was one continent. Continental drift cause a separation into multiple continents. 2. The oldest know human settlement on the planet is near Waterval Boven. It is estimated that over 1 million people lived in this settlement. The estimated age is between 180,000 and 240,000 years old. the next oldest is in China, and about 50,000 years old. With that in mind, we could postulate that all humans came from this area. SO, the question then is: "why do you forsake me and try to remove me from my ancestral land, my black brothers?" :-) Just saying.

      charlesmakgale.radingoane - 2012-07-29 12:21

dont forget that you believe in smone's thoughts.

      pws69 - 2012-07-29 12:28

@charles, I had to google smone. I LOVE IT!! You learn a new thing every day. Not to detract from the fact that we have the most important archelogical find in the world today, in fact so important that the government has restricted access to the site to preserve and protect it. Why are you not celebrating the fact that South Africa is the cradle of human kind, the birth place of a civilisation so ancient almost no record exists of it, yet was so advanced they were mapping the stars?

  • Skoppensboer - 2012-07-29 12:20

Its funny how these idiots always claim that their fore-fathers owned a developed farm. What about undeveloped government land? You do know that your precious cANCer owns undeveloped land, right? Go and get yourself a patch from them and build your own damn farm! Oh right, then you will actually have to work for once in your lives.

      robynne.els.1 - 2012-07-29 13:24

That's exactly the point! They don't want to have to work for anything! white settlers got the land undeveloped and turned it into something! Its much easier to just beg for handouts and toi toi when you don't get what you want! When they get developed land and that land then becomes barren who then will they blame?

      Muffin_man_can - 2012-07-29 13:41

They are too lazy and useless to develop something from scratch, so easier to claim what belong to someone else..

  • Alice - 2012-07-29 12:48

@delwald montgomery,If you all claim that we originate in West Africa, like ur history books claim we migrated in 1500( very short time to loose every tradition and culture)why is it that West Africans and all the tribes of SA don't understand each other completely and don't share same dialect . Bantu Lang are closer to east African  , Swahili to be presise. I have been around Fulani , Mandingo , Igbo, Hausa, delta, Benni, bagongo, Calabar, Bakongo,Gabon  tribes etc, none of their languages match Sotho, Zulu, Xhosa, swati, etc. don't forget that blacks never recorded history it's only whites that did and wrote all these to suite themselves  and justify their land claims of Africa. Khoisan is the only language that is similar to Xhosa. Don't forget that there were no boarders in Africa, ppl could roam freely wherever they wanted, boarders were created when the settlers came. If u look at European history, it's been recorded that the Romani gypsies were present during the middle ages and no one knew where exactly they came from,it's been said they settled in euro around 11 century. cz they never told the truth from the beginning. They traced their language dialects and it matched an ancient language that was spoken in northern India and their DNA was closely linked to Sihks. You can see even today that they look similar to Indian ppl and their dress code is somehow closely linked to Indians. Having nose piercings, hair texture, scarfs etc..

      Alice - 2012-07-29 12:56

Omwana" means "baby/child"  in Swahilli Plural - "Abhana", bana= Sesotho  "Mwana" means "baby/child" in Swahili./ mntwana= Xhosa, ngwana= Sesotho "Kamwana" means "baby/child" in Kikuyu. East Africans share distinctively some words with some SA tribes but not central or North Africans. These are some among the many Bantu languages spoken in Kenya. The classification 'Bantu' therefore is as a result of the striking semblance in their syntax and morphology, and not their genetic make-up.

      commentator.guy.1 - 2012-07-29 13:45

@ Alice - Close but a few fallacies there... Xhosa is traced directly back to Niger-Congo language family. Swahaili also originated from the same family but seemed to take a route further north and east along africa at some stage in history, then The Xhosa language tree did. At the end of the day a large proportion of African languages can be traced back to the Niger-Congo branch. I did however learn something new and thats the xhoi influence on Xhosa language. Which led me to the discovery that Xhoi as a people were actually far more widespread then I initially belived. An estimated 15% of Xhosa vocab is directly influenced by Xhoi language. So I would like to apologise where I earlier stated Xhosa had no xhoi influence. This was false.

      Alice - 2012-07-29 14:08

True , the Xhoi were more widespread due to their Normadic nature.Very true that Nguni languages can be traced back to Congo-Niger Lang family(1000 BC). I'm only arguing about the 1500 Bantu migration theory that White Saffas seem to stress about all the time. Their argument is somehow flawed. Have you ever wondered why Most East African tribes wear beads, go to initiation schools, facial red clay influence , shaving of their heads, etc..I can go on about their culture, norms, tradition and associate most of it to our local Khoi, Xhosa, Sotho tribes. Does Maphugubwe ring a bell? Why is it that our SA history books we learnt in schools never touched any topic about history of Maphungubwe..There's only less than ten wordsI can pick from Lingala language( 70% ppl speakLingala in Central Africa namely Congo) similar to Zuluand Xhosa like, impuku, inyoka, inyama etc. All these words I've picked from Lingala are all animals or insects( would be interesting to find out why do we only share same words for animals and insects,,lol! This a another topic for another day.

      el.torro.509 - 2012-07-29 14:58

Ultimately the who was here first argument is irrelevant as at some stage every human being had an african ancestor. Using your logic then 7 billion all deserve free african land

  • martin.pearce.3762 - 2012-07-29 13:16

If a 'squatter' is in a position to build such a house, WHY TE HELL IS HE SQUATTING?Is this 'self proclaimed leader' getting funds from the other squatters? What happened to the 'willing seller, buyers' concept? Just words. You sell or we'll take over seems to be the way to go.

What makes it rightfully yours? Because you are black? Ok clown

      el.torro.509 - 2012-07-29 15:19

Well actually my ancestors a few hundred thousand years ago were black africans so actually its my land too. Anyone can chose a point in history to make a stupid argument as to why they deserve something.

  • gail.hayesbean - 2012-07-29 15:17

@ Lennon: So Lennon you favour history over legality I understand. If this is the case then how about all the people of colour ie Africans who have left Africa and settled in other continents be returned to the African continent thus making room for the 4 million or so Europeans living just in South Africa. Hang on, some of those people have lived abroad and married Europeans resulting in a hybrid race for which there is no continent. What should be done with them I wonder. Who will decide for the people returning on a historical basis what belongs to whom? Are those Africans now living in UK for eg for more than one generation still Africans or ar they too colonialists? Mankind as a whole originated so it is thought on the African continent - this can be proved through something called DNA from both your mother and father's side. That is why our blood groups are the same and if you are in a taxi accident and require blood, they can use any person of the same blood group and rhesus negative or positive factor in both a white or a Chinese or an Indian from India to save their lives. You can google this if you like. The computer which you use to write your views was invented by a white person as were cars and TV's and washing machines. I could elaborate further. None of the modern conveniences including money existed in Africa before the white man came. We brought the ideas, your African heritage is that your ancestors turned south and lived with what you found.Legal/history?
