Stellenbosch - A fire ripped through and caused severe damage to the Klein Libertas Theatre in Stellenbosch on Saturday morning.

Repairing the five decade-old cultural hub could cost hundreds of thousands of rands.

According to municipal spokesperson Vernon Bowers, the blaze is believed to have started sometime before 07:00.

“When the manager arrived and opened the doors of the main hall, he found the stage alight,” Bowers told News24.

The inferno was doused within 30 minutes of fire services’ arrival, he adds, but the 55-year-old theatre burnt to the ground.

Theatre lovers expressed their shock on the theatre’s Facebook wall.

“Cheers for the memories and all the drunk evenings. Such a big loss to the SA music scene,” one fan wrote.

Former 7de Laan director Henry Mylne wrote: “Daar gaan ook ‘n stuk van my soos van vele, vele ander kunstenaars [There goes a piece of me, and of many, many other artists].

“Dit moes nie gebeur het nie. Die herinneringe deur die jare van die teater en die wat daar binne gewerk het te mooi! [This should not have happened. My memories of years at that theatre and those who worked there are too beautiful]."

The cause of the blaze is being investigated.
