Infrastructure boost for Limpopo varsity

Johannesburg - The University of Venda has added new buildings to its campus so that it can accommodate the increasing amount of students and staff, it said on Thursday.

"Due to the demand for access to higher education, the university was forced to double its intake, which currently stands at about 11 000 students," vice chancellor Peter Mbati said in a statement.

"This puts immense pressure on the current infrastructure to accommodate the needs of an increased student and staff population."

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, who is the chancellor of the university, officially opened the buildings, worth nearly R220m, on the campus in Thohoyandou on Thursday.

They are a life sciences building, a student administration building, a lecture theatre complex, an extension to the school of environmental sciences, and extensions and refurbishments to the library.

There is also a new female residence, an upgrade of sports facilities, and road and electrical infrastructure upgrades.

"The budget for urgent infrastructure developments totals more than R840m," said Mbati.

"This will provide for four new student residences, a 24-hour study centre, an information technology centre and a new mining engineering building."

He said the infrastructure development was largely funded by the department of higher education, but that the university had also contributed from its own savings.
