Initiate dies trying to escape school

Johannesburg - Two teenagers died at an initiation school in Ottosdal while seven others were hospitalised with septic wounds, North West police said on Thursday.

"A 17-year-old became very ill and succumbed to his wounds whilst the other [teenager] was assaulted by workers at the school after attempting to escape, and died of his injuries," Sergeant Karen Tredoux said in a statement.

A traditional healer and a worker at the school were arrested.

Police received a call on Wednesday saying the initiates had died.

The school had 21 boys, aged between 14 and 21, and was closed down by police on Wednesday.

Seven of the remaining children were admitted to the Ottosdal hospital for treatment of septic wounds.

"The remaining 12 were handed over into the custody of their parents and are also being treated for wounds," Tredoux said.

Police are investigating two counts of murder.

Ban these schools. How many more young men must die or lose their tools?

      JohnnyBGood - 2011-12-15 15:57

If this is done properly, I believe it has its place. I recall something similar from a couple of years back. Then a 'leader of the traditional medicine men' also blasted these schools that dont do it properly. O well, I am glad I am past this age og having to prove anything to anyone. Except my missus, maybe :)

That's what you get for your tradition and culture..

      Rob - 2011-12-15 15:05

Here is a thought Theresa. Tradition is what uneducated/unthinking people follow regardless of cost and impact. Culture is what politicians use to manipulate worldviews. Well, probably not to useful, but there surely is a difference.

Thats the ignorant thinking there. Just coz u dont subscribe to a certain beleif doesnt mean you have to trsh those of others. Rather keep your racist comments to yourself!

  • Humble - 2011-12-15 14:56

But yet STILL the parents send their children off to be butchered! I spoke to a client of mine some time ago about initiation school & was shocked, to say the least, at the amount of money that it costs! Her specific choice of school cost R15000!! I say the parents should be held accountable along with the so called "traditional healers"!

Yes lets respect a culture that performs surgery with a pieco of dirty glass and kills those who choose not to undergo said surgery.

Show one instance or chapter in any book or refer me to history where there has been so-called EQUALITY, bah!!! Has never been, neither is it at present nor will it ever ever by in the future and respect, how many of today's so-called educated people knows what the word means - its case of "I have more money, drive the best car, are in control because of legislation, etc. etc.' and oh by the way, just as many racists you claim there to be from white people, the figure is equal from opposite side.....!!!

      Deon - 2011-12-15 15:38

      Yes, rather watch the Proteas.

      Malcolm - 2011-12-15 16:55

I find it difficult to have respect for any culture that slaughters a young kid because he chooses to exit a circumcision rite.

Put the parents and the so called healer in jail.barbaric

  • lebo.lathane - 2011-12-15 15:25

I'm all for culture/tradition, but a single life is simply one too many to lose in the name of it. To many, these kids are simply stats but their families are left to grieve and endure immense pain. Really sad how eroded the value of human life has become. As for beating a child up for attempting to escape, it's simply barbaric and the law should whip the perpetrators too.

  • Lynn - 2011-12-15 15:26

Why are these things still happening. This is disgusting. How many young boys must die before this is stopped.

  • Sphiwe - 2011-12-15 15:31

I understand the importance of these schools, however there has to be rules to regulate this industry, ultimately these people make money from these schools, and completely miss the point and relevance. Regulated they can be monitored by the department of health, and assisted with medical tools and the senseless loss of lives on the hands of these chance takers.

      GlamourBoy Sindelo - 2011-12-15 15:37

I went last year and I saw that the proper rules and regulations are there and facilities are set by the government but it is up to the families to make sure that they are followed. It is sad how many lives are lost senselessly. Cultures should be respected

      Charles - 2011-12-15 16:04

I agree, stupidity and backward thinking should be respected. Just like the flat earth society

  • sonwabile.nomnganga - 2011-12-15 15:52

I am a Xhosa man who fully back traditional circumcision. The concern I have is the age. These boys are young. and secondly the people carrying out these practices dont know their job

      Humble - 2011-12-15 16:09

that's the thing... the poor boys are being scarred for life (if they survive) because of their parents stupid decisions!

  • ec.van.niekerk - 2011-12-15 17:42

Wonder what the ration between completion and death are at these "schools"

  • Fidel - 2011-12-15 21:49

    Ubudoda bunzima, buyasetyenzelwa!

  • Alva - 2011-12-15 22:49

Surely their rights are being violated? This tradition is something from the stone age! If the boys die, traditional healers should be had up for murder!

  • Gail - 2011-12-16 19:28

Circumcision actually originated according to the Bible as part of a covenant Abraham made with God that all male children over the age of 13 should be circumcised. Many of these so-called cultural traditions have their origins in the mist of time and were recorded for posterity in the various religious books. They came about as a result of experience and to prevent illness and made sense at the time. On the African continent with migration southwards and dispersal of peoples and death of elders the reason for these decisions were lost but the custom persisted. In a hot climate with very few water sources circumcision makes sense. In the Northern Hemisphere circumcision is not so vital because climate is cooler and water plentiful. I have 3 sons and my gynae obstetrician refused to circumcise the first one at birth claiming it was barbaric and unnecessary since their father was from the N. Hemisphere and uncircumcised. My eldest son then had to endure an extremely painful procedure and treatment because he developed an infection because the foreskin was too tight to retract and wash - this when he was 3 years old. I cursed that gynae for the rest of his life. My father had endured a similar experience when he was 5 years old and had advised all his offspring to have their sons circumcised as the Jewish do at 8 days. It is a great shame that this procedure has come to be seen as a way of making money by unqualified unemployed people resulting in deaths.
