Johannesburg - Eleven miners who survived a fire at the Gold Fields' KDC mines in Merafong have been discharged from hospital, the company said on Wednesday.

The injured were in hospital for observation and counselling, it said in a statement.

The fire, which claimed the lives of five miners at the KDC (Kloof Driefontein Complex) west mine on Saturday, was still burning on Wednesday.

"The... teams continue to work at the... shaft to extinguish the fire that is burning at around 2 800m below surface.

"KDC West remains closed... and the investigation into the cause of the fire continues."

The KDC East section was reopened on Tuesday night.
