Inmates to be screened for TB

Johannesburg - All inmates entering correctional services facilities will in future be screened for tuberculosis (TB), the SABC reported on Sunday.

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said correctional facilities have been identified as among the places where TB is prevalent.

"Early diagnosis means early enrolment onto treatment programmes and a reduction in chances of infecting others, thus significantly improving the overall performance of our TB control," said Motsoaledi.

South Africa's correctional facilities were said to be the worst affected in the African continent.

Motsoaledi donated state of the art GeneXpert machines to correctional facilities that can diagnose TB within a period of two hours.

You mean in all this time we have not tested convicts for infectious diseases before placing them in confined areas with thousands of other people?

Gordon I along with you ( im sure) thought that with our countrys track record ,prison populations would be one of the key areas to aim at to fight the prevention of infectious disesases. I was obviously wrong.

Inmates were screened before being placed but due to the turnaround time with the previous sputum test that was in use, inmates would still pose the risk of infecting others with TB. With the GeneXpert they are diagnosed and treated withtin hours. I think the heading on this article is misleading as it implies that inmates were not bein gscreened previously.

When Shibir Shaik and the police chief and a few others were miraculously pardoned due to ill health, the country was told that every inmate is screened on incarceration - so what has changed, what is the big deal now?

You only thinking of screening for infectious diseases in prison populations now in 2013?, Im not too up to date on the technology but im wonder what the hell have you been doing for the last decade or so.
