Insult law wouldn't be fair - Cosatu

2012-11-15 15:10

Johannesburg - Calls for a law protecting President Jacob Zuma against insults would not be fair, the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) said on Thursday.

"Every individual has the right to dignity and to be treated with respect and that must be safeguarded... but you cannot have a law which only applies to one person and not others," Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Craven said.

SA Communist Party general secretary Blade Nzimande reportedly backed the call made by his party in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday, for a law protecting the presidency from attacks that were "unfair, and lacking in fact and truth".

"People can differ with me and you can insult me as you like, but disrespect, that is not acceptable," Nzimande, the higher education and training minister was quoted as saying by The Star.

"We are being undermined by whites."

He warned that Zuma supporters would soon reach boiling point.

Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi on Thursday took to social networking site Twitter to voice his opposition to the SACP's call.

"I don't want anyone insulting anyone & dignity of all must be protected! But a single law to protect one person takes us down Zim route [sic]," he wrote.

Oh goody some sense prevails yet!

      tebo.go.5 - 2012-11-15 15:20

      Tyrant governance

      gideon.walt - 2012-11-15 15:21

That this general secretary doesn't know his country's own constitution. Maybe Zuma has his arm so far up this okes a$$ and playing his mouth like something from the Muppet show. Would seem the case.

      michael.horton.566790 - 2012-11-15 15:22

This Blade is as thick as a tree stump! How can you say that "you can insult me, but don't disrespect me"???? And he is the HIGHER education minister nogal as well... I will only respect Zuma when he earns it! I had and still have much respect for Mandela so you cannot tell me that because I am white I disrespect blacks cause then I would not have respect for Mandela either! So this thick headed ugly faced d00s does not know WTF he is talking about!!!!

      godfrey.welman - 2012-11-15 15:32

Shame, Blade is only covering for his job....gotten use to fancy German car and fat salary.

      jason.heineberg - 2012-11-15 15:33

There is a niche the South African job market. All our politicians need a "common sense consultant". Basically this job would entail reviewing any political statement before it is said publicly and then showing the relevant politician if what he/she was going to say would make him/her seem stupid due to some major oversight.

      thando.gqabaza - 2012-11-15 15:36

You only need an insult law if you have a total buffoon in power. A normal person of average IQ would be able to defend himself. Just look at that picture. This idiot is an embarrassment to black people. As for Blade , he's the one person that can stand next to Zuma and make him look smart.

      fussed.anderson - 2012-11-15 15:38

We dont disrespect you because you are black, we disrespect you because you are STUPID

      edward.patterson.923 - 2012-11-15 15:43

"People can differ with me and you can insult me as you like, but disrespect, that is not acceptable," Nzimande, the higher education and training minister was quoted as saying by The Star." Who decides when an insult becomes disrespect. Is it the wording of the insult? Or maybe it's the thought and attitude behind the insult, then you would have to engage the Thought Police to determine the attitude behind an insult. Say goodbye to free speech.

      talana.malherbe - 2012-11-15 15:48

      @thando, lol good one!

      andrew.hendrikse - 2012-11-15 15:58

Why don't we just ban stand up comedians, cartoonist, political satirists, jokes, a sense of humour and telling the truth!! If the President is naked what must we say?!! Zuma is an insult to our depleting democracy!! He is an insult not the other way round!! It has gone beyond the joke!!!

      morris.khunou - 2012-11-15 16:16

@Thando> that is a chosen picture intended to cartoon! Thats how media work! He did not pose to be photographed like that. Get over hatred my sister many of us are not embarrassed as we know and understand what is at play here! These is politics and politics is not football! Zuma is going to be President for the next seven years. A baby which is born now will be in Grade 2 when he lives office! What would have this amount of hatred done to you?

      ryan.a.smith.3958 - 2012-11-15 16:22

      for once Vavi makes sense

      imam.madi.129 - 2012-11-15 17:16

Thanks God for those who can still say no to the dictatorship of the blunt blade. How about the ANC be given an honorary presidency for 5 years BUT keep state power very very far from them. That might save us from a police state ruled by pagas and guns. Let the coalition of the able (ANC excluded) manage the affairs of the state so that we can all be off antidepresants for a while, have some pride back for a while, and build schools, clinics, libraries and a country we can be all proud of. I am not sure we will get it with the ANC unfortunately and the Zulus want Zuma as president because the tribe will feel powerful again, that will remind them of Tshaka's time. Ok, whatever it is, just keep the those going to mangaung in december away from treasury and other key organs like police and judiciary please. Let them stay in manguang forever, even if it means killing each other en mass there, to let us breathe better.

      ray.syst - 2012-11-15 20:53

Racist of the Day - Blade Nzimande Is it not a paradox that he holds the position of minister of HIGHER education, while he excretes the crap he does on such a regular basis? http://www.facebook.com/ray.syst

  • jason.heineberg - 2012-11-15 15:17

Basic logic, doesn't take a genius to say this. How anyone ever thought such a law would be just is beyond me.

  • kenpeg.dawson - 2012-11-15 15:19

Law will not be fair. Nobody will insult anybody IF they do not give them reason to do so. Anybody can insult me personally if I give them the reason to do so. The old law applies: Give a man a stick and he will hit you with it. Please honourable President Zuma dont give us the stick.

      peter.gibbs.5895 - 2012-11-15 15:30

You can't use "honourable" and "Zuma" in the same sentence.....

      kenpeg.dawson - 2012-11-15 15:33

SSSSSSSSSSShhhhhhhhhh Trying a new plan to see if it penetrates.

      SaintBruce - 2012-11-15 19:07

Kagiso - it is not a crime. In a free speech society I can call you anything I like other than what the Constitution declares is hate speech. If you have enough money you can sue me for defamation - if you could prove you had anything to defame in the first place - and we would contest a civil matter. You try calling the SAPS for a domestic dispute. They won't respond because name calling is not a crime. Oh , and this isn't France where you are guilty until proven innocent by their judicial system.

  • rob.bayliss.94 - 2012-11-15 15:22

Take a breath Blade, try to understand! That is...... Understand that there is a difference between insulting the position of PRESIDENT and insulting the man, Zuma. Considering what the man is suspected of doing I am suprised that he has not been subjected to much more than the spear etc. But the problem comes when the behaviours of the man overflow into the credibility of the position. In any credible society the man would be kicked into touch long before the situation had reached the abysmal situation we have today.

If Zuma behaves, act within the spirit of the constitution, stop cover-ups and corruption, listen and protect also the rights of minorities, stop his and his cabinets arrogancy, stop marrying and producing children, he shall not have to worry about insults or any unslaughts from ordinary Citizens. Somebody is now trying to cover cover-ups. He must grow up or leave.

Feels like I have woken up in North Korea, where the dead presidents are worshiped as gods. Vavi is 100%!! Nzimande would fit in well. He could stand all day and watch young women in military uniform fawn over the Dear Leaders Grandson. He can assign "minders" to all Imperialist tour groups. No need to evesdrop on cellphones as they are banned. Also no internet for the common man. Fekking paradise for man who professes freedom yet pushes communism and fails to see the problem.

  • gina.gentle.5 - 2012-11-15 15:31

Maybe the law makers should consider introducing a law that prohibits the president of the country from acting in a manner that invites insults.

      100% agree with you Gina

  • nick.d.hunt.3 - 2012-11-15 15:36

Zuma is a wanker! There, I just said it publicly!

  • winifred.watson.9 - 2012-11-15 15:37

Firstly, our Zuma has no respect for the law so why must we. Zuma has not earned respect from the people, he has been very disrepectful by allowing his cadres in office to steal taxpayers money, to use the taxpayers monies on frivilous parties holidays etc and he defends them. He did not step and sort out the education crisis, he defended his arrogant minister responsible for the crisis, she is still in her job. That he can just up and take himself from the taxpayers coffer to upgrade his private residence to that of a King's palace is another respect because he is being sneaky and coniving behind our backs, the same when he wanted his private jet. I expect him to get it, it probably is on order if it were possible to check. To actually come out and state that he cannot sleep at night thinking about the poor, whilst plans go ahead for his palace....eish just words roll off his tongue because they are written for him and he has no idea of what he is actually rattling off the paper given to him. When trouble is in the land, zuma flies out leaving behind others to sort it out, no decisions are made by him except to stand for a 2nd Terms, that is the only decision I have known him to make oh forgot to marry more wives. Until we have a true and honest leader then zuma will continue to be heckled because he is not an assett to us but a huge liabilty and the people in the street have now acknowledged that. His time is up he has just gone a bridge too far.
