Polokwane - Six men awaiting trial for various crimes escaped from the Malipsdrift police cells on Sunday, Limpopo police said.

The prisoners were being served their meals when they overpowered a police officer, said Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba.

They had disarmed the officer of his service pistol.

The escapees were awaiting trial for offences ranging from murder, attempted murder, robbery, assault with intend to do grievous bodily harm and stock theft, said Ramatseba.

An intensive search has been launched.

might be one of those plaaned things, you know the ones where money changes hands and the one police man turns a blind eye

They are awaiting trial prisoners, you can not necessarily label them criminals. without condoning what they did, experience and time has taught us that most of those that escape, it's always with the assistance of the police officers. Be that as it may, lets hope they will be caught and returned to the holding cells

    1) the cell should not have been opened that why you have hatches. 2) why was the officer armed, every professional knows you never carry a weapon that can be used against you in a detention area. other than that just a typical day in SA hey?
