Cape Town - From Blade Nzimande claiming the nationwide fees protest is not a crisis, to comparisons to the Arab Spring, we bring you a roundup of the best quotes from #FeesMustFall so far.

“[My father] was crushed when he found out that he had to raise R6 500 for registration. We have livestock at home so my parents had to sell one cow to raise the money.” -18-year-old Banele Mathenjwa's parents had to sell one of their most prized possessions to send him to university.

"It is a challenge, but I wouldn't call it a crisis. A crisis implies that the situation is so bad that there are no mechanisms to deal with it. There are mechanisms in place." - Minister of Higher Education and Training Blade Nzimande.

“The ANC must stop being arrogant and implement free higher education for the poor. We also demand that the ANC recalls Higher Education Minister Dr Blade Nzimande.” - Former Wits SRC president Mcebo Dlamini addressing students outside Luthuli House on Thursday.

“Never and never again should African people suffer like they did. I call upon all households and request their solidarity... because my child cannot live uneducated because of the 6%." Buyisiwe Majola, president of the African Education Governors Association of SA.

"We cannot continue as usual. We are no longer in a moment in which we can quibble over percentages. We call for a radical reinvestment in public universities by all who manage, work and study in them." - A letter written by 490 local academics to Blade Nzimande, Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene and vice-chancellors.

"The... interesting fact is that we’ve seen students from other campuses unite on social media and now we’re seeing similar actions on other campuses around the country… smells like Campus Spring." - Student Village youth marketing CEO Ronen Aires.

"We do not agree with the 6% cap. We do not want any fees to be paid by students because there is enough money to give to students to study for free. We are going to fight on the streets with students until there is victory." - EFF Parliamentary Chief Whip Floyd Shivambu outside Parliament.

“We have grown investment in this space, almost trebling it over a very short period of time. We accept that challenges remain, but we need to find a sustainable way of funding educating." - Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene during his mini budget speech on Wednesday.

"This is not going to be a problem that is going to go away." - Ilan Price, son of UCT Vice-Chancellor Max Price, who was arrested on Wednesday during the protest outside Parliament.

"Of course I’m proud, he’s an extraordinary young man. He is a leader... This is about principle." - ANC stalwart and cleric Frank Chikane on his son's arrest.

"South Africa is witnessing a return to its past as anger and frustration of a younger generation clashes with years of poor policy formulation and lack of implementation." - political analyst Daniel Silke.

President Jacob Zuma is yet to comment on the matter.
