Jackie Selebi dies

2015-01-23 11:07

Johannesburg - Former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi has died aged 64, the African National Congress said on Friday.

"The department of correctional services has confirmed this to us," spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said.

The corruption-convicted Selebi died on Friday morning.

Eyewitness News reported that Selebi's friend, Schabir Shaik said he heard the news this morning.

"I believe he's been in an induced coma for some time now for about two-and-a-half weeks. He finally passed on between late last night and early this morning I believe," he was quoted as saying.

"He was a good man," Shaik said.

"I have good memories when I worked with him at [ANC headquarters] Shell House in the early 90s. I recall him to be a good comrade."

His lawyer, Wynanda Coetzee, confirmed his death to Sapa.

The former head of Interpol started serving a 15-year jail sentence in 2011, after being found guilty of corruption in 2010.

He was released on medical parole from Pretoria Central Prison after serving less than a year of his sentence. According to media reports, Selebi has suffered from diabetes and had kidney problems.

Born in Johannesburg in 1950, Selebi was married to Anne and had two children.

  • Max Qum - 2015-01-23 11:14

Ok now we can believe that his parole was legit, where is Shaik? By the way may his soul rest in peace.

      Chris Du Toit - 2015-01-23 11:51

His parole was not legit just because he died. it took him years, that is not terminally ill. its like saying everyone in jail should be released because that are all going to die!

What does one say about such a sad life. He could have meant so much for our society but prefer to be another corrupted cadre. Condolences to the family who lost their love one.

  • Petrus LeRoux - 2015-01-23 11:14

One for one the old members of the old crooked guard is kicking the bucket, many thousands were murdered on his watch while he was nursing his dealings with known mob bosses

      jako - 2015-01-23 11:24

its funny how right wing whites hate FW and call him a traitor, and the far left blacks call him a murderer...

      Petrus LeRoux - 2015-01-23 11:29

When did I wish selebi or anyone else a speedy death you idiot?

      Joepie Marais - 2015-01-23 11:39

  • Wandile Wiseprince Hlotsheni - 2015-01-23 11:19

Whats good about a person losing his life? Do you think his family is jumping up and down being happy because they lost their family member. Just yesterday news about a white drug smuggler who is about to be executed in Thailand. You white people had sympathy for his family. You just hate black people, you whites. Admit it.

      rsleetcher - 2015-01-23 11:23

@Wandile, they have never been apologetic for their racism and hate of blacks, in fact it is openly displayed here on News24

      Phumlane Mkhwanazi - 2015-01-23 11:27

      Why are you surprised Wandile?

      Belinda Dempers - 2015-01-23 11:27

I had no sympathy for that man. He will get what he deserves for the crime committed. not all white people base reactions on colour.

      Colourless - 2015-01-23 11:36

I dunno hey, I seem to hate people who are liars, thieves, murderers, rapists, embezzlers, sanctimonious bigots. If that makes me a racist then guess what.... I'm cool with that.

      Tina Butler - 2015-01-23 11:42

No I actually don't Wandile. I hate fraudsters, criminals, liars and crooks. But all of us have some of it in all of us, so I feel actually quite sad for his family and friends.

      Zinzimame Mthutlo - 2015-01-23 11:43

I really do not care of their racism, what I know is that the youth of Soweto & Gugulethu and Langa will start with the Somili's and finish with them

      Lorain Maseko - 2015-01-23 11:58

Very hateful lot. Then they wonder why people like Malema are in existence.

      Lorain Maseko - 2015-01-23 12:01

Just the other day some woman in florida rammed her car into a 3 year old girl who was aobut to go into the shop with her mother and guess what this lot does? They feel sorry for the driver coz shes white. I cannot fathom the hatred

  • MIcheal Rhodes - 2015-01-23 11:23

Some people on this page is sickening. You want to fight for all your worth for a murderer like Eugene De Kock, but when another criminal with a lessor charge dies, you rejoice therein. It really makes me wonder if justice is really what we seek or do we still see justice with goggles tainted with racism and a nostalgia for what was...

      MIcheal Rhodes - 2015-01-23 11:31

Raheem I am staring to think that too.

      Secrecy Bill - 2015-01-23 11:36

No whites I know fought for Eugene De Kock ! .... Yoi have jist insulted the vast majority of whites you black racist ! .... (Should whites now presume that all Zancers are racist ? ? ? ) .... Use your brain cell before using racist hate speech !
