Johannesburg - Jamming devices with a street value of R200 000 were recovered and one person arrested in Midrand on Thursday afternoon, Gauteng police said.

The devices, used in hijackings, especially truck hijackings, were found following an operation by the national intervention unit and Gauteng police, Brigadier Neville Malila said.

Police followed up information that led them to a company in Midrand, where they confiscated 17 jamming devices and arrested a 24-year-old person.

"The arrest came after a lengthy investigation on the selling of these devices," Malila said.

"Police visited the company where they were given a presentation of how the devices work. The suspect is facing charges of contravening the Electronic Communications Act."

Independent Communication Authority of SA officials at the crime scene confirmed the devices were illegal.

"Gauteng police are also investigating the possibility that the suspect may be linked to the sales of other illegal devices," Malila said.

"The investigation continues and the suspect will appear in court soon."
