Johannesburg - A policeman was killed and another two were wounded in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, on Monday afternoon, Gauteng police said.

Three men tried to rob a store in Hillbrow. One was arrested, but two managed to escape, Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

Officers followed one of the suspected robbers, believing he was armed. When they confronted him, he ran away. The officers chased after him on foot.

Another officer, 29, in a police van, also followed him and when he blocked his path was shot and wounded in the neck.

Two officers, in civilian clothes, followed the shooter with their weapons drawn when they were confronted by other officers who thought they were fleeing criminals. The two constables were shot.

One officer, aged 31, was shot and killed, and another, aged, 30, was wounded.

The wounded officers were taken to Milpark Hospital in a serious condition. No arrests had been made.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate would investigate.

Cops shooting cops. Thought they would communicate with each other, or does that only happen in the movies.

This is horrible. I think and suggest cops must have someform of secret dress code or a chain badge that can be exposed when in persuit of a suspect. this mistaken identity shooting is happening more and more frequent

Looks like to me that the robbers have a better strategy than the police that look like chickens running without heads.

Very sad and confusing. Who's who in the zoo.

Police really must wear something invisible that will be easy for them to identify each other, such as reflectors and badges,we are sorry of what happened, really sad.

Its time that goverment starts to look after our police officers. Give them bullet proof windows on their vans. Give them helmets. These poor people are getting killed because they are not equipped to deal with to days criminals. Its really sad!

its very unfortunate that the general public is not safe, if these guys kill each other like this in broad day light in front of the people coz of mistaken identity then who knows what happens in the dark... i thought shots are supposed to be fired only if the suspect shoots first not shoot to kill then ask questions later, come on guys, our lives depend on you, you are suppose to protect and serve the community...

when situation is tense, you dont have room to ask the person to identify them.remeber the person has a gun in his hand,if he is a thief he wont ask you out for lunch,he is going to kill you.its a sad situation though.
