Johannesburg - Seven people were arrested for speeding on the N1 over the weekend, Johannesburg metro police said on Monday.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said a 36-year-old man was caught driving 174km/h on the N1 north in Midrand shortly after 03:00 on Sunday.

"The man was visiting friends in Johannesburg when he was caught breaking the 120km/h speeding limit in his silver VW Polo," said Minnaar.

"He paid the R1 000 bail with six other motorists, five men and a woman, and was released. The woman was caught driving 169km/h."
