Johannesburg - Johannesburg's emergency services said on Thursday that it took firefighters six hours to extinguish a fire that swept through a factory in Denver, central Johannesburg.

Spokesperson n Robert Mulaudzi said the extent of the damage had not yet been established.

The fire started about 05:00 and one man injured his leg while running out of the burning print ink factory building.

He entered the building to try to extinguish the fire, but failed.

He was injured on his way out and was treated by paramedics on the scene.

Thick clouds of smoke had earlier covered most of the M2 highway near the Cleveland off-ramp, but cleared later.
