Johannesburg - The Emergency Management Services (EMS) said on Wednesday they were dismayed by the arrest of one of their Johannesburg firefighters for allegedly fraudulently taking cash in exchange for jobs and certificates.

The woman, who was based at the Eldorado Park fire station, was arrested on Monday.

She had been with EMS for over eight years, said spokesperson Nana Radebe.

"The Johannesburg Metro Police’s internal affairs unit had been instructed to probe alleged corruption after a tip-off from a concerned employee," said Radebe .

Johannesburg Metro Police spokesperson Chief Superintendant Wayne Minnaar said the woman was arrested following a sting operation.

"She was meant to have met someone at the KFC on the corner of Small and Jeppe Street, where she was to sell a certificate for R3 000 so the person could get a job in the EMS," said Minnaar.

The woman was arrested and charged with fraud and corruption. An internal disciplinary hearing will be held.

Radebe said they believed more EMS employees were involved in the scandal.

She warned the public to never fork out cash for employment.

"The public safety department has recently advertised positions for EMS Firefighter/EMT and JMPD officers’ positions and appropriate recruitment processes will be adhered to and no positions are sold," she said, adding that the EMS would not tolerate corruption.
