Joburg principal in disciplinary hearing

Johannesburg - The disciplinary hearing of a Johannesburg school principal charged with insubordination will continue this week, a Gauteng official said on Tuesday.

Education spokesperson Charles Phahlane said Rivonia Primary School principal Carol Drysdale was facing the hearing "for failure to carry out a lawful instruction".

Drysdale appeared before the disciplinary committee earlier in the day. The matter would continue on Wednesday.

Phahlane declined to comment on the hearing.

The Sowetanlive website reported on Tuesday that the disciplinary hearing arose from an incident in February 2011, when the Rivonia school placed a Grade 1 applicant on its waiting list.

The school said she was placed on the list because her parents' application for admission was made late and the school was full.

The provincial department instructed the school to admit the girl, but was rebuffed.

The matter then went to the South Gauteng High Court, which ruled that it was up to the provincial department - not the school governing body - to determine the school's maximum enrolment, the website reported.

This principal has the sympathies of all logical South Africans with just one tiny bit of reasoning ability. What a total disgrace the education department is. Disgusting!

Problem with government schools in Africa...too many children per teacher, a principal sued for seeing that.... ridiculousness!!! No child has to compete with 40 other children to learn, governments need to understand that. No wonder private schools are the way to go. I do feel so so so sorry for those of us who can not afford going the private route

Governments do understand that - thats why they send their own children to private schools with less pupils per class.
