Joburg to appoint municipal ombudsman

2012-11-29 10:25

Johannesburg - The city will appoint an ombudsman to deal with municipal-related complaints from the public in 2013, according to a report on Thursday.

Johannesburg Mayor Parks Tau said on Wednesday the ombudsman's office would be an independent mechanism which would take appropriate action on poor service to the public, The Star reported.

The office was aimed at increasing and enhancing the accountability of public officials.

The public were expected to have recourse through such an office without having to resort to the National Consumer Commission or the public protector.

Residents were given three months in which to make an input into the setting up of the office.

As long as the Ombudsman is impartial and not just another case of Cadre deployment

What wil it help..? His phone will just ring.... and ring.... and ring....

Why do we need this appointment. The Public Protectors office is there as well as the National Consumer Commission. All the Municipality is doing is creating positions where people check on people who check on people who check on people... We all know where the problem lies. It's called corruption and it's been done blatantly yet nothing ever happens to those who get caught. Jasmat Pieterson is getting a slap on the wrist for her wasteful expenditure.

You must be joking... just another ANC lackie, cadre deployment, to enrich a friend

If the Ombudsman is appointed by the Municipality I cannot see how he can be impartial. Looks to me like just another layer of icingt to be creamed off. If CoJ were really serious about this they would approach civil society to create an independant structure and appoint appropriate staff, including an Ombudsman. Provided that the incumbent was given authority to investigate, disclose, and drive resolutions I would see this as a useful way to use my taxes/rates. Having an internal appointment is likely to be more money siphoned off somewhere sweet.

This smacks of Job Creation - Like commissions of enquiries etc. We in the same crap - only the depth varies. These people are of no help - in the end the big guns win - we are just drops in the ocean to them - cash cows! And besides, lets ask who pays these people that seemingly try to "help us"? Yes.... think about that!

  • gary.desousa.5 - 2012-11-29 11:10

It I think will land up like the consumer commission, understaffed and ill equiped to handle the complaints. I read somewhere that they get 2500 quiries /complaints every day so that already does not sound good. What will happen to all the current staff in call centres and at the municipality employed to handle complaints??

They will do what hey always did - have never-ending tea breaks.

I wonder which MP needs a job for his brother, cousin, father, nephew, son........Job creation in my opinion and will probably be corrupt as well!

Ja no fine, but instead of setting up all these independent bodies surely it's just easier/cheaper to ensure you just do the job your suppossed too-i mean all the laws are there-just need it to be enforced and ensure that you have effecient systems and processes in place-or is that just to simple logic?

Pity the Ombudsman who takes on this task. Who will appoint this person? How will this position alleviate the problems presently encountered by the local populance. In fact it would need an army of ombudsmen to resolve the present situation and do not believe the position will be impartial as a city appointed employee.

When you plan save money to buy medicine (ombudsman) for a disease INSTEAD of preventing (better systems, controls & employees monitoring) it first, then it shows the priorities are upside down. What a waste, if the ombudsman will genuinely try and do the job, that chap will be frustrated BIG time as all fault leads will be pointing to the crooks who appointed him /her, - then what?

' Residents were given three months in which to make an input into the setting up of the office. ' - hOW, WHAT'S THE E-MAIL ADDRESS ? 2 years after declaring a ' legal dispute ' over a number of ' JOURNALS ' for +- R 100,000, I am still battling to get answers from jOBURG, Public Protector, NCC, Gautent Premier HOTLINE etc.

Will the Ombdudsman be affiliated with the ANC? If so, dont bother.....

  • proudafrican.niemand - 2012-11-29 12:07

My fellow white brothers and sisters, your negativity towards anything that is done by the ANC is not helping South Africa. please give credit where credit is due

      alexandra.robertson.969 - 2012-11-29 12:48

there is no credit to be given here. The office has yet to be set up and the council is still denying that there is a billing issue while everyone knows there is. Credit will be given when COJ can send a resident a correct bill. IT's not much to ask for.

"which would take appropriate action on poor service to the public" My suggestions on this, Appoint a new government to fairly and properly use the money that the tax payers are paying, because at this current moment in time i can see no real proper use of the tax money we are slaving to pay.

  • peter.j.cock - 2012-11-29 13:22

Typical. They know there is a problem, have known for years, and have done nothing about it except blame apartheid. Sorry, my bad, they have done someting, they gave water and electricity away for free. Now they recognise there could be a problem ( post lenasia) and that is despite the millions already spent -- and appoint somebody to spend 5 years finding out what the problem is ??

    Job creation that is all.
