Joburg to get fraction of parking money

2012-05-08 09:23

Johannesburg - The City of Johannesburg will get 20 to 40% of the income generated from kerbside parking, Business Day reported on Tuesday.

The percentage would depend on whether the suburb had the potential for higher or lower income. The remainder of the money would go to contractor Ace Parking.

The kerbside parking was already running in Braamfontein and the Johannesburg CBD. It would spread to Norwood, Melville, Brixton, Emmarentia, Rosebank, Roodepoort, Birnam, Parkview, Sandton, Florida, Fordsburg, Greenside, Linden, Rivonia, Craighall Park and Northcliff on June 1.

It would cost R8 an hour and increase to R8.50 by July 1.

Many of the businesses in these suburbs had slid into decline in recent years, and residents and business owners claimed the introduction of paid parking was going to chase customers away.

    What about Soweto?

      Kala - 2012-05-08 09:33

The parking meters were sold as scrap metal

      Leon - 2012-05-08 09:52

if they get away with it they will implement it everywhere. gov has lost its mind and is double taxing left right and centre. we beat the tolls we must fight this along the same lines.

      Sean - 2012-05-08 10:01

I would like to see who the stakeholders are for Ace Parking, my gut is telling me more cadres and corrupt oficials. I also see CPA issues around "The percentage would depend on whether the suburb had the potential for higher or lower income". This smells like demographic based pricing and as such will be entirely illegal. Lastly as stated before, why no so called "non white" suburbs on the list? What about areas like Soweto, Azaadville, Lenasia, Alexandria. Also, why no areas outside of JHB? This is yet another gov't SANRAL cockup. I did not believe that nature had the ability create stupidity in the abundance that our gorverment has.

      John - 2012-05-08 10:24

the council will get nothing people wont pay and they will have to issue summonses, these wont be paid and will have to issue warrants, trace and get them signed by the guilty party so their 20% will be used for admin, also seen how the system works, the parking attendants will pocket halve the money as they can easily sell the parking spot for halve price and not enter it on to the machine. only honest people will pay and that is why they have picked these areas, another sanral scam that the petrol price will bail out ,but make no mistake they will somehow get ther money.

      Wesley - 2012-05-08 11:21

I saw on Carte Blanche on sunday, ther is a person with a machine that issue the tickets. Who is going to control it that they are not only issue tickets to certain people, if you know what I mean

      Trevor - 2012-05-08 11:51

This is molestation in the highest degree

      Glyn - 2012-05-08 12:07

Cure the anc disease! Vote DA.

  • Kala - 2012-05-08 09:32

Brace yourselves folks, we're about to take another one up the a$$!!!

      Gordon - 2012-05-08 09:39

Social media has changed the game. The taxpayer masses no longer sit in small groups complaining, but can stand together against this inept and corrupt government.

      Gareth - 2012-05-08 09:43

The only power you have is to not pay, not at all, ever. No company can carry the cost of operation without income. Just DONT pay. There is no "system" in the world that can cater for a united community of people standing together and saying "No, we wont pay for your mess, your holidays and your entertainment. We wont pay the parking fines, the parking fees or anything related to it, we will not pay!" Simply, the system will fail and will do so in shorter space of time the more people take this stand and say no.

      andre.rabie3 - 2012-05-08 10:14

U sit in your vehicle when the bloke comesw to colect the money, u say u are not leaving now, and when he walks away to another vehicle u drive off, there is nothing he can do as he does not give u a receipt, so this is once more theft from the ruling goverment off the day!!!! i will not pay, end of story,

      ludlowdj - 2012-05-08 10:19

No KALA, we are about to force government to take another one up the Ass. They though e-tolling was a isolated incident, we must show them that its was infact the first volley in a war they started and which we the people will end.

  • zaatheist - 2012-05-08 09:34

What a surprise. The scheme has nothing to do with regulating parking for the benefit of the public but is just another money making racket with some cadre getting the contract.

  • Kala - 2012-05-08 09:35

SANRAL and ACE Parking should be listed as public enemies number 1 and 2. It's about time the ANC's parking meter expired.

      Frank - 2012-05-08 09:55

ACE is the pseudo BEE partner of Servest.......the real culprit in the mix! They are a huge company with fingers in all sorts of facility orientated pies trying to gain a place at the trough, it seems!

  • Matthew - 2012-05-08 09:35

Nine tenths is a fraction too.

  • Klipkop - 2012-05-08 09:35

So who owns Ace Parking? The ruling party? 20 to 40% is a joke.

      colin.dovey - 2012-05-08 10:05

Ask yourself this question....who is Juliet Paulsen? Is SHE another Nazir ACE Parking?

      Peter - 2012-05-08 10:18

Company owned by Juliet Paulsen There are no meters - but marshals that will collect the cash and issue you with a parking "permit"

      Jacqui - 2012-05-08 11:37

Peter, we have this Ace thing where we live. I get fedup if I just want to pop into a shop and have to pay for an hour. One of the 'ticket' people told me they earn so little they can't even buy a week's food from that money. So someone is getting rich, very rich and not treating their employers well.

  • Johan - 2012-05-08 09:35

F+&k them. I work in Parkview and need to park my car. Just as the Toll money goes to some contractor, now some other company has come up with a scam to enrich themselves. It is public area and the benefits should go to the public if this is going to happen. What is it with these guys that they can sell off space that belongs to the people of our beautiful country????? Time we saw some government that really feels for it's citizens.

      Mike - 2012-05-08 13:20

Well said. Where is the benefit to the people? What do we get in return for our R8 per hour? Councils must serve the people - this does not benefit the people of these areas in any way.

      Mike - 2012-05-08 13:39

I park undercover in JHB for less than R8 an hour...are they insane???

  • Sean - 2012-05-08 09:36

Another scheme tp privatise our roads. Wonder which ANC bigwigs are cashing in this time?

  • Gavin - 2012-05-08 09:36

Soon we'll be fitted with devices that track how much we breathe so that they can charge us for ssame. This f'ing government is all about squeezing as much money out of joe public as possible so that they can put the money in their pockets.

  • TheyTookMyNickLaZynEko - 2012-05-08 09:38

  • koo.doyle - 2012-05-08 09:39

I for one, am tired of being bent over a barrel and a**-raped by our crooked government. WTF should we pay for parking, in our OWN suburbs, if there will be NO benefit to us at all? Who is Ace Parking, and why should the taxpayer, who already pays through every orifice be supporting them? Take a stand and refuse to pay.

      Kala - 2012-05-08 09:54

Exactly KOO.DOYLE. It's all pay pay pay but we see absolutely no benefits. F#$k 'em I ain't paying. (mainly because I live in Durban)but then I don't put money in the meters here either because most of it goes to a poltician's son who got the contract to empty the meters. He too gets to pocket about 70% of the proceeds.

  • William Teixeira - 2012-05-08 09:45

It's probably some councilor's wife, cousin or uncle's company (Ace Parking) and kick backs are the order of the day. Viva ANC viva!

  • Ken - 2012-05-08 09:48

Soon they will want to charge you for parking in your own driveway

      Press - 2012-05-08 10:31

Well - thats the next thing - property taxes already the new milking shed . .

  • Pieter Mulder - 2012-05-08 09:48

  • kasamkelo - 2012-05-08 09:57

Juliet Paulsen Owner and Managing Director - ACE Parking Services (Pty) Ltd Juliet started her career in 1994 when she joined a parking meter manufacturing company as an assistant admin manager. From these humble beginnings she took on additional responsibilities, advancing quickly within the organisation. By 1999 she was part of the senior management team and, as a consequence of her skill in human resources, was offered the position of Personnel Director. She accepted the task of managing 125 employees, a number that would more than double over the next five years as the company started running parking sites.

      Frank - 2012-05-08 10:12

Look a bit further to establish her involvement with Servest Parking, a subsidiary of Servest (PTY) Ltd. I am always in doubt when huge companies get involved with small ones on public money tenders.......why wouldn't they want 100% of the pie instead of sharing it with someone??

  • Martin - 2012-05-08 09:58

Im having a hard time convincing myself paying tax is a good thing, its like giving money to a junkie, let the ffkers crash and burn.

  • noelle14 - 2012-05-08 09:59

and they just keep taking!!!!! what about bicycles... will you start charging for those too? oh wait and prams and wheelchairs? I had an incident where I literally ran in and out of a shop - I was 10 mins and I still had to pay R8 - ridiculous, I think you should have 30mins free.

  • kasamkelo - 2012-05-08 10:00

SUPPLIER - Ace Parking Services AREA - Braamfontein Fined R200 for marshal... I had to attend a meeting at a company in Stiemens Street, Braamfontein this morning. Upon my arrival, I found parking and parked my car at approximately 08:45. Upon my return, I noticed a fine on my windscreen. While I was standing by my car, totally flabbergasted what this was about, I was approached by a marshal who informed me about the practice of having marshals issuing tickets/receiving payments for parking. I was NEVER approached by anyone requesting me to pay any parking fee, I didn't notice any signs/notices explaining any process/procedures/liability for me to pay parking in the close vicinity, there were no parking meters and on top of it, living/working in Pretoria made me TOTALLY unaware of this practice. I feel this is grossly unfair and unacceptable that I have been fined and now have to make phone calls and write letters because of a marshal not doing his job! He claimed that he didn't notice me/see me parking - in the presence of a traffic officer I got hold of! Ace Parking, get your act together . You can't blame or fine me for your employees' incompetence/slack performance and not have clear, noticeable/visible signs up. Shame on you...

      Kala - 2012-05-08 10:17

I got fined whilst sitting in my car in roodepoort in an apparent no parking zone. There was no yellow or red lines on the road and no No Parking sign anywhere. When I confronted the cop he said the coucil had not yet put signs up. I took pictures of the area and sent the fine to the public prosecutor. Never heard another thing.

  • Marion - 2012-05-08 10:22

Had the strangest dream last week. Dreamed that meter taxi drivers were hiding drugs in parking meters that had been jammed with stones. (lol) Now today there is an article about parking meters. Hope there's no chance of my dream becoming a reality.

  • papi.koko - 2012-05-08 10:37

They jst want to make jouburg a city for the rich, e-toll, parking meter, prepaid water meter... wats next..?

  • Jozi - 2012-05-08 10:40

anybody catch Carte Blanche on Sun, they had the Md of ACE on and she is sub-contracting the work to a sister company of whom is white owned (which I have no problem with). the contract signed does not allow for ACe to sub-contract. The director of the company ACE sub-contracts to used to be the MD of ACE until BEE came into play.

  • Piet - 2012-05-08 10:41

    DO NOT PAY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jay - 2012-05-08 10:42

Dear JHB METRO & ACE PARKING, This PipeDream of yours will soon be LOOTED! LOOTED by the Street Thugs & Street Homeless that will ROB and MUG all your Marshalls who will be carrying all that CASH! You deserve this and the Public Outcry and Fury to Follow. I REST MY CASE

  • Muhammed - 2012-05-08 10:50

Its seems that its become a crime to drive a car in South Africa. From e-tolls to parking money - its all punitive! The government rapes our pockets and our complaints fall on deaf ears. Is this what the call democracy?

  • Hermann - 2012-05-08 11:09

I can see our "trusty" government has done market research to increase economic growth in the above mentioned areas. Wow, this is getting ludacris. If this continues, so many businesses are going to feel the brunt, and some may even close down.

  • Bruce - 2012-05-08 11:14

You would think that these ANC idiots would have learnt from e-toll that a tax where the bulk of the collected funds goes to admin costs should not even be considered and will rightly irk people, but no.

  • ashne.segal - 2012-05-08 11:15

Another Scamral - brace yourselves guys! No more shopping in these areas

  • Piet - 2012-05-08 11:26

But the people vote for this circus! So stop whining!

  • colin.windell - 2012-05-08 11:32

    Stop this now...

  • Jacqui - 2012-05-08 11:32

    Ace parking another BEE mess?.

  • Koos - 2012-05-08 11:39

So who is going to protect the parking assistante who is walking around with bags of money. Or will this create the requirement for another closed "tender" to go to another cader.

  • thasmeel.singh - 2012-05-08 11:40

I guess the ANC cronie who scored this tender would be opening a bottle of champagne to celebrate. typical corrupt idiots!!!

  • Carolyn - 2012-05-08 11:51

I was given a ticket for the meter running out and I was the only one who got one ( the whole row next to me was in the same situation but I had out of town number plates) The R8 per hour for this new system is as expensive as parking at the airport what a huge rip off

  • kalin.pashaliev - 2012-05-08 12:02

So? Just park a little bit further and walk. It's not like we live in New York City where people have no choice where to park. We live in a spacious city. Melville will have it on 7th, I don't see where else, so just go to the side streets. The same goes for Parkview, Linden, Rivonia. The point is to try and boycott paid parking spaces.

  • Anton Cloete - 2012-05-08 12:04

This is a bloody disgrace! What will the ANC do next to suck us dry?

  • Glyn - 2012-05-08 12:06

Cure the anc disease! Vote DA.

  • Neville - 2012-05-08 12:10

Why not just have parking meters like before?

      Hester - 2012-05-08 12:28

Because they steel and sell it for scrap metal.

  • Elize - 2012-05-08 12:12

We pay this in the WC, not sure how it is controlled but it seems to work, needless to say the state of our pavements differs hugely from Gauteng. We are definately NOT paying R8.50/hour though!!

  • IcemanGP - 2012-05-08 12:28

No matter what, this cANCer is good at trying to make money for itself. 1st was in renewing every 5yrs your previously "Lifetime" drivers license, then they charged you an extra R30 on your vehicle license, then they decided that number plates should wear out every 5yrs as well. Now they even go as far as to plop a parking space on a pedestrian crossing to make an extra buck. WTF next??

  • ujozi.sales - 2012-05-08 12:58

Stuff all this greed, we pay and pay and pay, is nothing afforded us in this country. Since ANC came to power all we do is pay, and where is the money going? under apartheid there was corruption as well but when funds where allocated to build a road or hospital it happened irrespective of who was making money. Under the ANC funds just disappear and the promised infrastructure with it. ANC has no idea what its doing, soon we will have an oxygen tax too, toll pavements etc. Come on man this is ridiculous. I HATE U BASTARDS!

  • Kuno - 2012-05-08 14:13

60 to 80% will go to Ace Parking... just wonder who Ace Parking is... i hear a gravy train running. How can they charge money... did they add any value or do they offer a service besides robbing us blind?

  • Leonard - 2012-05-08 14:32

what about cleaning the city with a broom and plastic bags its a disgrace how take some much money and give no service delievery

  • Laurence - 2012-05-08 14:46

Screw this idea. Dont pay them a cent. Another example of amatenda connections. I smell a bye law enforcement nightmare for these municipalities, and they dont even get the money. Another ripsnorting ANC joke!

  • lauren.botha - 2012-05-08 15:02

Does anyone know why they have introduced this, what is their aim? Besides making money for ACE. What is the explanation given for charging people to park on public roads?

  • Sav.Demetriou - 2012-05-08 18:36

And who, praytell is a shareholder / part owner of Ace, I wonder...
