Johannesburg - Energy Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson was scheduled to address the 58th general conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Austria on Monday, the ministry said.

Joemat-Pettersson will highlight developments in the nuclear sector in South Africa and its experience using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

"The conference will discuss the status of nuclear power and technologies in the world and matters related to nuclear safety, nuclear security and technical co-operation."

The IAEA’s latest report on the status of nuclear power will be presented at the conference.

According to the report, there are 435 nuclear power reactors operating in 30 countries and 72 reactors in 15 countries are under construction.

The report notes that South Africa is one of four countries currently planning to build new nuclear power plants.
