Johannesburg - A Soweto taxi driver was hijacked and shot on Tuesday morning, Gauteng police said.

Also on Tuesday morning, in a separate incident, a Soweto man was arrested for the rape of a 19-year-old woman the night before.

"The man was driving a taxi early in the morning when he was shot at and his taxi taken away," Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.

The driver was shot three times in his upper body.

Empty cartridges

He was left on the street in Mofolo North, where residents called for help.

"Police responded very quickly, and they followed the taxi to Meadowlands, where the hijackers jumped out and ran away," he said.

Three empty cartridges, from a 9mm firearm, were recovered at the scene of the crime.

A case of hijacking and attempted murder had been opened.

Makhubela appealed to the public to contact the police, on 011 527 7000, with any information about the crime.

On Monday night, a Soweto woman was abducted and raped by a man she knew.

"A 19-year-old girl was in Zola 3, when a known man to her grabbed her," said Makhubela.

The woman was taken to the man's shack, threatened with a knife and raped.

"After the rape she came straight to the police station," said Makhubela.

She led police to the place where she had been abducted, and a 31-year-old man was arrested.

He would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of rape and abduction.

Perhaps the same crowd who attempted to hijack the bodyguards of that fat dude (Mandela's grandson I think) outside KFC, but then realised that they didn't know how to drive such technologically advanced luxury, so now they're back to what they actually CAN drive?

I have to shudder every time I read or hear that stupid slogan about Jo'burg being a "world class African city": World class and African are two mutually exclusive concepts, I'm afraid.

perhaps he wasn't hijacked, but rather punished for they way they ALL drive.

Its nothing new in this beautiful land of South Africa unless there is drastic change of punishment. Our Government, Law enforcers and the Judical system has to change to more harsh jail terms. Bringing back the Death Penalty would simply reduce serious crimes and also in the long term help save the tax payers monies. Our country's jail has been paradise for hardened criminals whilst they destroy the lives of law abiding innocent people by hijacking, murder, rape, house breaking etc. The people of our country that stood in to vote need to stand together and claim back their freedom and rights to a safe and healthy enviroment even if it means demanding the return of the death penalty. If this does not happen soon then this country will be doomed. Remember at the end of the day our government and its servants are supported by the Taxpayers of this country, so get off the cosy seats and do your job.

Those are people who should be taken away from the society as they want animals life. They should be arrested and then be sentenced to life or death we need a peaceful South Africa, like in Europe where one can travel the whole night without being done any thing criminaly related and transport is moves around the clock without any problems so we need such atmosphere in Africa but that can only happen if those who are in power do their work.
