John Block gets bail of R50 000

2012-11-21 14:44

Johannesburg - Northern Cape ANC leader John Block and two other provincial ANC heavyweights were released on bail of R50 000 each after they appeared in court on Wednesday, the NPA said.

Block, the ANC's Northern Cape chairperson and MEC for finance, economic development and tourism appeared in the Kimberley Magistrate's Court alongside social development MEC Alvin Botes, ANC MP Yolanda Botha, three officials from the SA Social Security Agency (Sassa), and one businessman.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phaladi Shuping said the seven were arrested for fraud, corruption and money-laundering to the value of R49m.

"Block, Botes, Botha and businessman Christo Scholtz were granted bail of R50 000 each," he said.

"The three Sassa officials Rodney Saal, Calvin Rayland and Palesa Lebona were released on R5 000 bail. The case was postponed to March 7."

Hawks spokesperson Captain Paul Ramaloko said the seven were arrested at their houses around Kimberley on Wednesday morning, in connection with crimes committed between May 2005 and December 2009.

Assets seized

Botes is the ANC's deputy secretary in the Northern Cape. Botha was elected provincial ANC treasurer in Upington earlier this year.

On October 29, the NPA asset forfeiture unit obtained an order to attach assets worth about R24m belonging to Botha.

The unit successfully argued that Botha disregarded tender procedures while she was head of social development in the Northern Cape, and signed lease agreements that benefited a company called Trifecta Investment Holdings.

In return, Trifecta apparently made renovations worth about R1.2m to her house.
Scholtz is the director of Trifecta.

The leases were costing the government about R3m a month, with some coming to an end only in 2017.

Botha allegedly approved decisions that went against the bid adjudication committee's recommendations.

The leases are for buildings rented by the North Cape department of social development in Springbok, Kuruman, Douglas, and Kimberley.

      bob.mcmillen.564 - 2012-11-21 15:17

Not a day goes by, have they no SHAME, and still the sheep will live in their shacks and blindly believe that their day in the sun is just around the corner, just keep having faith and vote ANC, it is truly hard to believe sometimes, I guess this is the sort of following the likes of Hitler achieved, blind faith that just doesn't make sense.

      alan.jerrold - 2012-11-21 16:28

nope innocent until joining the cANCer

      basil.jacobs1 - 2012-11-21 15:38

When the ANC members are involved, it seems to be innocent even after proven guilty. It's amazing how greedy their cadres become if given half a chance. Their bail should have been set at least at R1m for the amount involved. The cANCer is eating this country alive.

      sean.carbutt - 2012-11-21 15:43

@negry, ya boet like you, stupid until proven intelligent

      Deon - 2012-11-21 15:50

Corruption - The new epidemic is South Africa. It went viral after our honourable president with a "bond' on his R220 million personal resort were cleared from rape and corruption charges due to political strong-arming the now toothless Hawks (fond memories of the Scorpions remain) and NPA happened a few years ago. Not to mention his jail buddies now enjoying the good life on the golf course and in front of the TV. How pathetic the ANC has become…….still a freedom fighting party (yes, free our buddies from the corruption shackles capitalism forced upon them) instead of governing like a proper government believing in bettering the lives of all its citizens. All they’re interested in is getting rich quickly by any means, and showing everyone they have arrived. How pathetic.

  • Erna - 2012-11-21 15:22

    Is he still a MEC?

  • chadjason.wilson - 2012-11-21 15:24

Ok, is this a political arrest? Is Mr Block supporting someone other than Zuma? Can the NPA be manipulated? Can the Hawks be manipulated? Are these charges selectively made? Who can you really trust......

      chadjason.wilson - 2012-11-21 15:24

Not saying Mr Block is innocent though!

  • brendan.healey.315 - 2012-11-21 15:37

Sheesh check those bloodshot eyes... didn't know Kimberley had such good weed! Hope he gets the serious muncheees in prison!

  • craig.thom.376 - 2012-11-21 15:37

I am very suprised that a ANC politician is involved in fraud and crime, very strange indeed!

  • sango.jika - 2012-11-21 15:41

not a day goes by without the ANC being in the news. Imagine if you come up with a news site strictly covering ANC news, but you must be carefull not to report good news about them otherwise your business will go downs bad news sell. You can make lots of cash i'm just saying.

  • janpyramid.ponzi - 2012-11-21 15:50

Why does the media only/always show a photo of the ANC/polictician in these articles and never the other parties to the same scheme? Surely it takes 2 to tango? For instance: I will not do any business with Mr Scholtz ("the business man"). BUT, what does he look like? @News24 - biased and not very independent of you!!!! Who handles you from where?

  • jerry.phillips.393 - 2012-11-21 16:01

Shocking!! John Block again on the limelight for stealing tax payers money.

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-11-21 16:25
