Jub Jub sentencing postponed

2012-11-30 12:31

Johannesburg - Sentencing of convicted murderers Molemo "Jub Jub" Maarohanye and Themba Tshabalala was postponed in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Attorney Rudi Krause, for Maarohanye, applied for the postponement, saying he was recently appointed and did not have enough time to prepare.

Magistrate Brian Nemavhidi granted the postponement.

"The matter is postponed to December 5," he said.

Before proceedings started, photographers and cameramen were set up in a packed courtroom six.

Maarohanye was wearing a white collared shirt with blue jeans and Tshabalala was wearing a blue and red striped shirt, blue jeans and black jacket.

Police officers were sitting at the door to keep an eye on people entering.

On 16 October, magistrate Brian Nemavhidi found Maarohanye and Tshabalala guilty on four counts of murder and two of attempted murder, for using drugs, racing on a public road, and driving under the influence of drugs.

Brain damaged

Maarohanye and Tshabalala were drag-racing in Protea North on 8 March 2010 when they crashed into a group of schoolboys.

Prince Mohube, Mlungisi Cwayi, Andile Mthombeni, and Phomello Masemola, were killed. Frank Mlambo and Fumani Mushwana were left permanently brain damaged.

Nemavhidi denied bail to Maarohanye and Tshabalala after he handed down judgment.

Maarohanye approached the High Court in Johannesburg on 7 November against the decision to have his bail revoked. The court ruled against the musician.

Family of the schoolchildren were seated in the second, third, and fourth row of the public gallery.

Family and friends of Maarohanye were also present in court.

Why has this case been postphoned? especially for this long. they should just throw them in jail and get it done with.

  • ???? - 2012-11-30 15:40

Whatever man. Dec 5 is just next week. The lawyer wants to argue for a lesser sentence. Sometimes we let our disgust for others cloud our judgement. At times I think its just a bunch of young kids commenting.

  • andrew.mackie.90 - 2012-11-30 15:41

Why does a new lawyer have to prepare and for what reason? Surely his work would only begin after hearing the sentence and if leave to appeal is granted. No wonder our courts are backed up and prisons are full of awaiting trial inmates.
