Judgment day for Johannesburg cop

2013-03-27 14:07

Johannesburg - A Johannesburg police officer accused of shooting a fleeing and handcuffed suspect will hear his fate on Wednesday, when judgment is handed down in the Palm Ridge High Court, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said.

Sergeant Raymond le Roux allegedly shot a handcuffed man running from a police vehicle last February, IPID spokesperson Moses Dlamini said in a statement.

Le Roux had been called to a club in Boksburg North and arrested Rian Ramdin after he was found in possession of drugs.

A handcuffed Ramdin, aged 29, then tried to run away.

"The suspect shot and killed Ramdin after he allegedly ignored warning shots," Dlamini said.

At the time of Ramdin's death in February 2012, his family told Beeld newspaper they had begun to search for him when he did not return home.

"He always had his driver's licence with him. The police knew who he was but they made no effort to inform his family of the circumstances surrounding his death," his sister, Melody Perumal, told the newspaper at the time.

The Apartheid government left a legacy of brutality in the police force that will take AGES to change..

Can we still call these animals 'police'?

Hilarious stuff. Cuff someone and then shoot him. The cop should be in a mental institution, not a law enforcement institution.

On one thread we want the death penalty. On another thread we want to hang drug dealers On a separate threat we want cops to deal harshly with criminals And now we hate police brutality. Confused bunch... Message to everyone - be careful what you wish for because one day YOU will have to face the consequences.

once you let the suspect escape...you get fired from police service....once you shoot the escaping suspect you get arrested......so I think police are victims here.......everything is against their will.......Its time for the SAPS to strike ....we cant work in fear

      John Silver - 2013-03-27 16:16

No, but you can work with brains. Training and procedures are very very poor.

people of South Africa can you a one day ask MR President to give the police a one day off ....a day with no cops....and see if you really need them....then if nothing happened on that day....Zuma can fire us police because SA is peaceful

      leonard.tsolo - 2013-03-28 08:29

Ludidi, I will say what maleleka said. You are stupid my friend. Tell me, how far can a handcuffed suspect run? how much power does a handcuffed suspect have? As said above, you are really stupid. That's why you drag people and kill them instead of locking them up in safe custody. by the way, you don't fit to be a cop.Maroon.
