Judiciary mourns Gauteng judge's untimely death

Johannesburg - The South African judiciary is mourning the death of High Court Judge Haseena Mayat who died on Monday morning.

"We received the news... and was saddened by Judge Mayat’s untimely passing," Judge President of the Gauteng Division of the High Court Dunstan Mlambo said.

"Judges, court management, court staff and members of the profession received the news of her passing with shock."

Mlambo described Mayat as a very committed jurist who had established herself as one of the pillars of the Gauteng division.

"Her quiet demeanour, engaging discourse and decisive manner particularly in tackling difficult cases will be sorely missed by the division."

Mayat is survived by her mother and siblings. She was to be buried on Monday evening in accordance with Muslim rites at the Newclare Cemetery in Johannesburg.
