ANC frothing over Max Du Preez 'maaifoedies'

2011-10-06 18:50

Cape Town - The African National Congress (ANC) on Thursday took great exception to a Facebook post by Max du Preez, where he referred to ANC leaders as "maaifoedies".

In his posting, Du Preez explained the etymology of the word "maaifoedies", which an old ANC comrade had used to refer to the party in an e-mail about the Dalai Lama debacle.

Du Preez, curious about the origins of the word, traced it back to being the Afrikaans version of the American word motherfucker.

He goes on to explain that it's derived from Malay and Portuguese words, and the Malay-Portuguese language used by slaves in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in South Africa - a major influence of early Afrikaans.

English-Afrikaans dictionaries give the English of maaifoedie as rascal, or scoundrel.

Du Preez then ends off his post by also calling the ANC-leadership "maaifoedies".

"So ek se ook aan die ANC-leierskap vanoggend: Julle maaifoedies!"

The ANC, however, condemned "in the strongest terms as totally unacceptable" what they deemed to be an "outburst" by Du Preez calling ANC leaders "you motherfuckers".

"Du Preez, also a public figure, a former journalist and a political commentator, should know better than to publicly get entangled in using an expletive like that, stooping to gutter level and not just insulting, but also defaming all leaders of the ANC," the party said.

"Using profanity published in a public space like this doesn’t add any feather to his cap, but casts a shadow over his reputation."

"If Du Preez wishes to differ on opinion with any person in the ANC, it is his right to do just that.

"But, that does not give him a right to use such language [no matter how he tries to explain, repeat and even translate it into English] or to be the bully of the block attempting to hurt people with words," the statement said.

Those associating with Du Preez or have syndicated his writings, should take note of his abhorable action, the party said, adding that he owes all South Africans an apology.

oh max -- these were your hero's? What now? The corrupt, incompetent ANC opened your eyes?

      RACINGCAT - 2011-10-06 19:06

Truth hurts The shadow is over the ANC rather than Max Besides he is entitled to his opinion. Adorable not abhorable

      cliffarc - 2011-10-06 19:08

      - So Max , the former Anc sympathiser has maybe seen the light. We are going to need more than name calling Mr. Du Preez to rid our country of this Anc curse. You and your type got us all into this mess ,any ideas how to get out of it ?

      i.r.Baboon - 2011-10-06 19:14

Hai konna! Max was a comrade now he is a double agent!

      THE-SRG - 2011-10-06 19:31

why cant i say the same words when its posted in their own article?...it just gets blocked....mother facking fackers

      beicime - 2011-10-06 19:44

On the day the new ANC leaders understand that they are not capable to take this great nation forward, the ANC will have a chance of getting the right people.

      slg - 2011-10-06 19:47

It's never right to label human beings that way, it never moves things forward in a right direction, and there are much better ways of expressing frustration, anger, even rage. Max is wrong.

      Balmy - 2011-10-06 20:11

Gosh you people are so hypocritical. One moment you are carrying on about people who continue to support the ANC even though they are doing a crap job running this country but when people who were/are ANC supporters actually speak out against the party then this is not good enough either.

      cliffarc - 2011-10-06 20:16

      - @ slg - and I suppose in your world , the Anc can say whatever they like, including their famous warcry.

      THE-SRG - 2011-10-06 20:17

pls let us sing a song together...i call it 'Shoot the mother Fackers'...it seems appropriate for the occasion

      allan.clean - 2011-10-06 20:26

Where are our songwriters?? Its our History and we should have a song about this for our new struggle

      I_ARE_BABOON - 2011-10-06 20:27

i.r.Baboon, waar kom jy aan die stupid naam?

      THE-SRG - 2011-10-06 20:27

      ANC frothing.... cappuccino anyone???

      DoublySalmon - 2011-10-06 20:27

In my mind the ANC is a terrorist organization akin to the mafia. Once they stop stealing and letting people die by their incompetence and inaction they will no longer be criminals and killers in my mind.

      Rolie - 2011-10-06 20:51

You are right Max, they are a bunch of Futher Muckers. Gee,can they bitch when it goes against them.

      Karoobloed - 2011-10-06 21:19

Oh please - who do so many people continue to be so simpleminded? Max du Preez was an outspoken critic of Apartheid when it was not always safe to do so - he should be highly commended for that. Now he is criticizing the ANC, who has progressively been straying from the lofty ideals expressed in the Freedom Charter. He is to be highly commended for that too. Failing leadership should not be the only alternative option to the evils of Apartheid. South Africans, Black and White, deserves better than that. We could and should never return to the Apartheid style "solutions". And the ANC should be held to task for bad governance and poor visionary leadership. Why is that so hard to understand?

      Organist-1 - 2011-10-06 21:37

No, I think Max has just crossed his rubicon

      Blip - 2011-10-06 21:39

Well said, Karoobloed! A lot of these right-wing idiots eagerly supported a verkrampte government who brazenly committed crimes against humanity for 48 years and they still haven't woken up to the error of their ways. To Max's credit, he is smart enough to have changed his mind and his support.

      slg - 2011-10-06 22:06

Cliff, not at all. This applies to everyone, the ANC included, and especially the hateful rhetoric of the ANCYL.

      DW - 2011-10-07 09:35

      @ matt - see this link http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/Julle-maaifoedies-Max-Du-Preez-calls-ANC-leaders-20111006

  • Welleducated - 2011-10-06 18:56

But the words don't suit! I am disgusted. It should not be mother, it should be FATHER! After all, that is what the ANC really is to non-racist, forward thinking and intelligent people. To prove my point, for all the illeterate idiots, please press the unlike button and let us count you :-)

      Another day - 2011-10-06 19:30

You cannot even spell illiterate and you call yourself "welleducated"

      possum - 2011-10-06 20:09

learn to spell you numb skull!!

      Welleducated - 2011-10-07 07:20

Oh shmae, poor baibes. "Another day" and "possum" are havnig a queer collaspe oevr one wrnog lteter. If you illiterate fools want 2 join the ANC, be my geust, it is where you belong - among the rest of the fools. LOL :-)

      Welleducated - 2011-10-07 07:24

Oh, and yes, I left the word excatly as it is becuase even thuogh it took you 12 huors to decifer the word becuase you read words letter by letter and say it out LOUDLY, the rest just read it corrcetly. How long did it take you to read my last two comments? LOL, point proven, there are so many idiots out there.

  • Jonathan - 2011-10-06 18:57

"Those associating with Du Preez or have syndicated his writings, should take note of his abhorable action, the party said, adding that he owes all South Africans an apology." ANC is a joke, apologise to South African for what? ANC, Julle is maaifoedies!!! ANC does NOT represent all South Africans!!

      PinkandProud - 2011-10-06 19:57

Quite right. They only represent the riff-raff who are unable to think.

      RACINGCAT - 2011-10-07 06:07

Remember that this is going to get better......those people not in their comfort zone and have the proper poke are going to educate themselves out of discomfort. The old school ANC is becoming obsolete they need fresh blood not the corrupt lot we have now......

  • Doublepost - 2011-10-06 18:58

Wow, both are supposed lefties and are having a go at each other. Wonderful news indeed! Max is also a mofo, so the two deserve each other.

      cerveza - 2011-10-06 19:08

@Doublepost - aren't you and Max the same according to your race realist theory? does that make you a maaifoedie too?

      Doublepost - 2011-10-06 22:08

Cerveza, really? Is that the best you have? If I am a race realist I must be like every other White and think exactly like them. Have you gone mad? You believe every race is the same, does that mean you are like Malema and every other race or person on the planet? No, it doesn't, so why do you apply that theory to my beliefs. Once again, one set of rules for you and another for everyone else. I might have more in common genetically with Max but I don't care for him at all, nor do I have to. You, once again, cannot stand my beliefs because they differ from yours. Why don't you just hook up with Max and get a room already!?

  • Observer - 2011-10-06 18:59

If only our gavahment spent as much time on service delivery etc as they do on stupidity, all would be well.

  • Save SA - 2011-10-06 18:59

Shame the ANC can say what they want, even sing songs that are violent and bring harm to thers but when something is said agains t them thay dont like it. Hypocrites !

      cliffarc - 2011-10-06 19:12

      - Yep , symptomatic of a one party state dictatorship in the making.

  • v3 - 2011-10-06 19:00

How's it the maaifoedies in the ANC had no qualms when Juju isiBhanxa was stooping to gutter level and not just insulting, but also defaming leaders of their opponents? Hypocrites!

  • Brainbow - 2011-10-06 19:01

    Nice one Max!!!

  • maydayza - 2011-10-06 19:03

      mundu.olewega - 2011-10-06 20:29

They are worse than maaifoodies... their leader would screw anything that moved, but of course he will take a shower afterwards.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, careful Max, "maaifoedies" could topple the "K" word in the hierarchy of taboo words, however accurate it may be?

  • Rev. H-Cubed - 2011-10-06 19:08

So that is what it takes to convince the ANC that words can be hurtful, and some should not be spoken. I foresee a rash of "Dubula Maaifoedies" songs.

  • Graham - 2011-10-06 19:08

Max doesn't stoop to gutter level - he is talking about those already in the gutter!

  • Alan - 2011-10-06 19:18

The ANC are losing it!They are worried!!

  • guytom - 2011-10-06 19:21

The ANC will make the word widely used. Stupid maaifoedies!!

  • ObiterDictum - 2011-10-06 19:22

I believe Max's use of the word is a pretty convincing way of emphasising his utter exasperation and frustration with the government. The ANC of course will fail to see it, and if they did happen to connect those dots, they would merely lie, deny, dodge and evade it. If I were Max I would also point out to the ANC that they defame themselves everyday in their actions and non-actions. Max could not blemish the ANC leadership's image any more than they have already done so themselves.

  • Ozymandios - 2011-10-06 19:22

Now if the ANC had shut up and said nothing, no one would have been any the wiser. BUT as is usual with these politicians they have to try and create an escape route and will blow this all out of proportion to deviate us all away from the truth thats taking place and what are pretty sticky situations for them right now . Like web 24 that will not keep this blog of mine in print because they seem to remove all 99% of whatever I write. But I wont call the "maai(*&%$^s as that is wrong, demeaning and grossly cruel. If theANC had kept quiet all things would have basically remained the same. Now we will have Juliarse Dilema croaking some reply through the flu laden throat he now has, as to now within 24 hrs, why he HATES whites again, after his emotianoal outburst of yesterday as to how he will put his body on the line for us Mulungus. Now dear Max just see what you have done with your maai*&@#$%^$s outburst!!! Now Max you will see what happens when you are classed as a Turn Coat and no longer a sympathiser for the ANC cause. Strange how these armchair liberals all of a sudden, one bright Spring day, have a mid-course change of direction from when they were championing the road of so called Freedom taken by these "maai(*&%^$##%^^&s" and then realise that there are really a lot of wolves in sheep clothing out there.

  • Pekkie - 2011-10-06 19:23

  • Vela Stardust - 2011-10-06 19:24

So news24 will not delete my post when I call the cANCer a bunch of maaifoedies??????

      Neles - 2011-10-06 20:14

@Dmitri - no, they love it when their posters swear at blacks under the guise of swearing at the ANC it's your fellow posters who report posts like this one for having a different view, but if I want my post to remain, I'll just type a tirade swearing at blacks and I'm safe to post here. I'll fit in like a well educated, well behaved mature civilized human. This post will be reported and deleted as soon as the puppet gets around to it.

  • DerpyHooves - 2011-10-06 19:25

Whoa, does that mean if I make a word up and call people that word they'll be offended? In that case I define the word "Santorum" as a byproduct of anal sex. Eg. The ANC ran the country into Santorum. /Anyone wanna take a gander how long it post is gonna last?

  • Boxxer - 2011-10-06 19:26

  • Trueblue - 2011-10-06 19:31

Well, the ANC put themselves in the gutter long ago. Sooner or later somebody was going to stoop down to talk to them in a language they understand. What they reap they have sown. They called for the shooting of people. They called people tea girls and madams. They called people thieves and rapists, and they devised such gutter laws like Affirmative Action to cover up cadre deployment. They have caused more South Africans to live outside the country than at any time in the country's history. There is no better description. If they don't like it, then they had better start behaving in a respectful and dignified manner towards all South Africans and start talking about a revolution of good, honest and clean government. Maybe if they took the Constitution seriously, the rest of the country and the world will also take them seriously.

Surely the Luthuli House deployed greed steed riders have no valid complaint and their argument that "also defaming all leaders of the ANC" more is not possible?

  • Henry - 2011-10-06 19:46

This only show what the IQ of teh so called leaders of our beloved country is. Why do they not conern thenself with the real social problems of our country e.g. the out of control malema and his youth followers instead of making petty remarks on Max truthful statement. Petty we still did not raise about the old SA.

  • Levett - 2011-10-06 19:47

Max realise that the ANC is losing political ground. Now he tries to "kruip gat" at the whites again. You a two face MAX! I also call ANC members names but they my political opponent. I however respect any ANC member when he is playing his polical game well. But I have no respect for someone like Max. I doubt that the ANC has either. Max doesn't owe South Africans an apology for what he said, he owes the ANC an apology for betraying them. You a low life maaifoedie Max!
