Cape Town - An American woman who was fired from her position as a public relations executive for a racist tweet about Africa says “I am very sorry for the pain I have caused”.

Justine Sacco told the Cape Argus that “words cannot express how sorry I am, and how necessary it is for me to apologise to the people of South Africa”.

Sacco was flying to Cape Town from Heathrow Airport in London on Saturday. Before her flight left, she tweeted: “Going to Africa, hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!”

The tweet ended up going viral in the hours Sacco was in the air and got her fired from her company InterActiveCorp.

The hashtag #HasJustineLandedYet became the top trending topic on Twitter and the unfolding story was carried by news agencies around the world.

In a statement, the former PR executive said that there was an “Aids crisis” in South Africa. Sacco’s said she was ashamed for being insensitive to this crisis.
