Durban - The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday announced the dates for its Youth League congress where new leadership is expected to be elected.

The congress will be held on June 6 and June 7.

“The conference is expected to be characterised by robust engagements aimed at strengthening the youth wing of the ANC.

“The congress will be attended by both the national and provincial leadership of the African National Congress,” said KZN ANC spokesperson Sicelo Khuzwayo.

An ANC insider told News24 that the race of the provincial ANCYL chairperson is being contested by Thami Ngubane, who is a Greytown mayor, and Sipho Hlomuka, who is the current regional secretary of the Ukhahlamba region.

ANC national spokesperson Keith Khoza said KwaZulu-Natal was the only outstanding province to convene their congress; all 8 provinces have already convened their congresses.

Khoza said once the KwaZulu-Natal congress had convened, a national congress would be held to elect a new ANCYL president.

The ANC disbanded the ANCYL executive in 2013 and placed a national task team in place to try to rebuild its structures.
