Durban - KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head Major-General Johan Booysen was suspended on Tuesday.

"I can confirm that the head of the Hawks in KZN has been suspended but as this is a matter between an employer and an employee, this is all I am able to say," Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

Booysen was served with a notice of intention to suspend him last month and was called on to make representations as to why he should stay in office.

Booysen has in the past successfully rebuffed efforts to run him out of his office.

He was arrested and suspended previously, along with 28 members of the Cato Manor Serious and Violent Crimes Unit, who were accused of running a "death squad".

The case against the officers has stretched over four years, and has seen Booysen taking the fight to court.

He successfully had racketeering charges levelled against him set aside in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Durban last year.

He was then exonerated from departmental charges by an advocate who chaired his disciplinary hearing, and returned to work.

In previous court applications, Booysen has insisted that there had been a concerted effort to sideline him because of his investigations into a politically connected Durban businessman.

Booysen was not immediately available for comment at the time of publishing.
