Johannesburg - KwaZulu-Natal MPL Mtholephi Mthimkhulu has died, the presidency said on Saturday.

Mthimkhulu, a former MEC, was also a former deputy speaker within the provincial legislature, spokesperson Mac Maharaj said in a statement.

Mthumkhulu died on Friday. It was unknown how he died, or how old he was.

"Mr Mthimkhulu has contributed immensely to the building of a new South Africa in all the areas in which he has been deployed in his working life," President Jacob Zuma said in the statement.

"We wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the Mthimkhulu family, the government and legislature of KwaZulu-Natal ... and his former colleagues of Ukhozi FM at the SABC. May his soul rest in peace."
