Johannesburg - It appears some of those injured in an accident off the N3 in Hilton, KwaZulu-Natal, on Sunday morning were sitting in a trailer at the time of the accident, paramedics said.

According to ER24, three people died and around 29 were injured when a bakkie and trailer veered off the N3 and hit a tree.

Apart from sitting in the trailer, others appeared to have been sitting in the back of the bakkie when the accident occurred.

When emergency services and paramedics arrived, the over two dozen injured were found scattered across the scene.

ER24 said paramedics set up a triage area to treat the injured and to provide the seriously injured with advanced life support treatment.

The injured were taken to various hospitals in the area and the Jaws-of-Life were used to get the bodies of those killed out of the bakkie.

The cause of the accident was unknown.

Police were investigating.
