Durban - Metrorail commuters stoned Groutville Station in KwaZulu-Natal and set a car alight in protest over service delays on Thursday, the company said.

A railway line through Groutville had to be closed due to a technical fault at the station, spokesperson Thandi Mkhize said.

The subsequent delay angered commuters, who set alight a vehicle and damaged equipment. Police and Metrorail security were called in to restore calm.

None of the staff sent to repair the fault were injured during the protest. Full service had been restored to the station.

*sarcastic clap* Well done...if it's late, burn it. Such amazing logic at work here.

Who pays for the burnt car and damaged equipment? Did the police arrest the perpetrators for arson and damage to property? *sigh* I wish we were a 1st world, sensible, mature country...

In Canada they riot over ice hockey. Let's not pretend this is a 3rd world problem.

@silindile - It sounds like you are grasping for excuses. Does it happen virtually every day in Canada? There were riots in London last year - they reported on it in the news for months, people were shocked and distraught, businesses closed early and employees sent home, and the perps are still being arrested to this very day and locked up by the functioning criminal justice system for long sentences... Yes it happens in 1st world countries, rarely, but when it does, boy does the law come down hard! Just because it is now a common daily event in SA to block public roads, throw stones, burn cars and destroy public and private property doesn't mean you should become anaesthetised to the issue.

According to the article on one population sector being superior, this is a classic example. How does destroying our infrastucture help with service delivery ?

Can someone please explain to me the mentality of these "people". All they can do is hop from one foot to the other with their fists in the air and burn and destroy things. Have they not yet learnt how to communicate as human beings? But then again what can you expect when you look at the leaders of this country.

Having used a train i have had first hand experience on these technical problem sh*t, a normal train, for the ordinary people, will be delayed on hours end, not alternate transport provided, but those that use business class trains, their train will pass by uninterrupted by the technical ''issue" . It iritaes people, who obviously have to account to their bosses why they came to work late, thousands loose their jobs daily due to metro rail.
