Durban - Police in KwaZulu-Natal arrested 349 people for sex-related crimes in April, Community Safety MEC Willies Mchunu said on Wednesday.

In the same period, 51 people were convicted for sex-related crimes, with a total of 412 years of imprisonment being meted out by the courts.

Mchunu revealed the statistics in Durban while announcing the appointment of the new head of the province’s Community Safety and Liaison department, Crosby Themba Mavundla.

Mavundla takes over from Ronnie Bhengu, who died of cancer at the end of 2013.

Mchunu said that the rape and murder of 86-year-old Austrian-born nun Sister Gertrud Tiefenbacher highlighted the nature of the problem in the province.

“This is how gruesome things are. We need to mobilise our community against this scourge and work closely with the police to deal with it,” he said.

He urged the media to play a major role in the fight against crime.

“If you play a role towards its elimination, you are not only serving the government, you are also serving yourself.”

He said that Mavundla would have to not only deal with the high rate of sexual crimes, but he would also need to deal with many murders, a growing drug problem and the proliferation of illegal firearms.
