KZN cops ignore nearby rape - report

2012-08-22 12:46

Durban - Police in Melmoth, KwaZulu-Natal, claimed they could not attend to an attempted rape complaint one block from their police station because of a lack of transport, according to a report on Wednesday.

The Witness reported that on Saturday, Mthonjaneni Municipality protection services manager Derek Horne heard the screams of two girls and reported the matter to police.

Local police said they could not respond to the complaint because there was no police car available.

Horne apparently told the charge office that an attempted rape was taking place only a block from the police station, but could get no undertaking from police that they would investigate.

Horne resolved to help the girls himself.

"I walked through an open security gate into the building, heading for the source of the screams and saw two young girls, I estimate about 12 years and 16 years old. They had been tied to cement windows, with rope around their hands, and two young men were attempting to rape them," Horne was quoted as saying.

The perpetrators ran off, and Horne helped the traumatised girls.

Captain Tienkie van Vuuren, spokesperson for Eshowe police, said an internal investigation would be launched into the matter.

      kala.bafazi - 2012-08-22 13:00

I had to read the article twice such was my disbelief. Oi Coppers!! Boots are a form of transport. Use them!

      carpejugulim - 2012-08-22 13:02

      Mark - 2012-08-22 13:12

They could not get their fat @rses out of the police station because they probably were afraid that their KFC would get cold.

      jeffrey.harmesson - 2012-08-22 13:43

Omrisho, it's SAPF now, not SAPS (News24 need to update their stock pictures). No 'service' is implied or delivered.

      bob.mcmillen.564 - 2012-08-22 13:46

What do you have to say about this Mr President ? what are you going to do about this Mr President ?, the same as you do about everything else that doesn't work under your leadership I guess, absolutely NOTHING.

      alf.pop - 2012-08-22 13:48

Were these reject cops waiting for the victims to come and fetch them? Fire them and lock them up!

      chris.novak.9235 - 2012-08-22 13:50

      shoot them in the head!

  • rohin.jadin - 2012-08-22 12:53

they were probably too scared to react cause they were scared of being sued for doing their jobs.

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-08-22 13:44

Probably too fat and unfit to run or walk one block.

  • kevin.pitzer - 2012-08-22 12:55

Well done Mr Horne...Guys like you have my respect. As for the cops....They should be charged for such lack of will to do their jobs !

  • shannon.moffett.9 - 2012-08-22 12:57

I phoned my police station, 50 m away from my house to say I had an attempted robbery in process. Was told they could not attend because they had no vehicles. They however happily walk to the Spar for goodies which is also 50 meters away. So much for stomach in, chest out!

  • psalm.proverb.3 - 2012-08-22 12:58

Mr Derek Horne, the 2 girls and South Africa thank you. As for the useless, heartless idiots at that police station...

      deniece.horne - 2012-08-22 17:15

Well done to my brother in law for risking his life to save the girls. Where the useless police sit and do absolutely nothing because of no vehicle. that's y this country is like it is!

  • shelley.vorster.9 - 2012-08-22 12:59

PATHETIC - there is just no other word for it - & then you WONDER why so many rape victims still keep MUM about their ordeals? Just a Q, I know it may be irrelavent - But are any of the cops at the station over weight????

  • simonehall89 - 2012-08-22 13:07

absolutely shocking i have NO faith in the SAPS wether it be KZN EC or WC they all bloody lazy and do NOT deserve to carry around badges that state they serve and protect. Thank you to the few that do what is required of them in terms of their job description as a police officer. To the rest RESIGN so that we never have to read a article like this again!

  • Michele - 2012-08-22 13:08

Ludicrous. Reminds me of about 2 weeks ago when it sounded like world war 3 just outside of my front gate, phoned 10111 to report numerous gunshots fired and worried that the service station next door was being robbed. What had transpired was that somebody had tried to rob the service station but the petrol attendants had caught him unawares and captured the culprit. They called the police to come and arrest the bloke, cops got there and the culprit managed to escape from them, it was in fact the police who were firing off at will outside of my gate. The robber escaped unharmed. Unreal but true.

      terrylee.heuer - 2012-08-22 13:46

Far too lazy to try and run and apprehend these criminals rather fire shots!!

      Erna - 2012-08-22 13:55

They should make the petrol attendants honorary cops.

  • vanmark - 2012-08-22 13:14

    lazy smucks

  • shane.m.thurston - 2012-08-22 13:27

This is not the first report of this kind of disgusting behaviour by our "police". How can they be so lazy?? The entire force on duty that night should be stripped of their badge because they have no pride.

  • judith.taylor.56 - 2012-08-22 13:32

Also boot failure - someone in the station put the lot of them on physicals. 1000 push ups to declare we will not ignore this again - daily!

  • Mya - 2012-08-22 13:35

Well done to the real man that saved these young girls from that scum. You sir are a hero for risking your life and doing what you felt was right.

  • Pulverturm - 2012-08-22 13:36

This should actually be taken up with the Human Rights Commission! Absolutely shocking!

  • helen.derobillard - 2012-08-22 13:36

Congratulation SAP not surprised at all, some cultures do not believe in rape as it is there right to treat women as they please.that is why rape in SA is not taken seriousley.

  • tiaan.hattingh.1 - 2012-08-22 13:37

    Lazy fat basterds

  • nick.lotter - 2012-08-22 13:41

Its time for the station commanders to be held accountable for their police officers and for the police officers involved to get fired. These things happen because nothing ever gets done about it. We always hear of stories like this, but we never hear of justice being done. The sad part is the police officers that are committed and dedicated also get a bad wrap because of this.

  • Dawn Campbell Gibson - 2012-08-22 13:42

I had the same sort of experience about 2 years ago. walked into a customers cafe and there were 2 men behind the counter and one standing at the door - not the same race as my customer and was told they had gone to pray. lucky for me, they let me leave and i went to the police station which was just around the corner and told them that something was not right, on returning the following week, my customer said they heard me there, they were tied up in the back of the shop, but police NEVER showed up, they were freed over an hour later by local security. - frightening to think, these are the people we rely on for our safety.

  • sgcrampton - 2012-08-22 13:43

lazy pieces of ....., the words I want to use are not allowed in this forum! This laziness is inherent in our society; people who use disabled parking spaces (who aren't disabled) just so they don't have to walk far, taking the lift 1 floor down (not talking about the injured disabled or people carrying heavy objects) instead of using the stairs! Never mind the not walking to the crime scene but the fact that they had no transport, what if they had to actually attend to a crime which they a needed to travel a fair distance?

  • barry.ahern.3 - 2012-08-22 13:45

Air consuming, good for absolutely nothings! Your brothers in arms defending the law at the mines, and yet you are too damn lazy to go round the block to help a woman in need of urgent assistance. YOU ARE A DISGRACE to the uniform, and you dishonour your brothers in arms actually doing their jobs!

  • Phil.Kleynhans - 2012-08-22 13:49

Well I wont call the cops anyway because I don't trust them. They would most properly rape you again Crime in the SAP is percentage ways 10 time higher as in the community

  • Sifiso Radebe - 2012-08-22 13:50

appalling to say the least i mean are they that lazy to ignore such a call...i truly don't think woman or their rights are appreciated in this country anyway we all know the SAPS are a dysfunctional unit who just thrive of our tax money....nxa and no guess they were black.

  • pisciotta - 2012-08-22 14:07

Whoever called should have said: 'Hey you fat assed Kefxxx's get over here now - BOY." That would have had them off their fat asses. But then they would come after the caller and have a turn at the victims themselves. SA is now in the toilet.

  • luke.dekoker - 2012-08-22 14:11

The one (you all know who)got away with rape and is from KZN, right? Maybe his cops do not think that it is a crime!! They are a disgrace.

  • Witty Dot - 2012-08-22 14:22

our police are useless. all they know is to kill our innocent souls and get bribery

  • Perfume5 - 2012-08-22 20:27

Mr Horne, kudos to you for risking your life to save these young girls. Were the police vans being used to pick up Nando's or KFC???????

  • josie.russell.10 - 2012-08-23 08:45

And this is why we have to pay pay pay for security companies to do the police work!!!! This is where our tax money is wasted - why not privatize as the security companies are doing a better job - and use our taxes for that. Thank god someone cared enough about the girls to do something about it.

  • rosemary.walker.39 - 2012-09-06 08:46

Well done Mr Horne for being a real man and doing something about it.
