Durban - Two people were killed and four others seriously injured when a light delivery vehicle left the R76 KwaMaphumulo Link Road in the early hours of Thursday morning.

KwaZulu-Natal EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie said that paramedics had responded to the scene of the accident and found the damaged wreck of the LDV in roadside scrub.

“Reports from the scene indicate that the vehicle had actually left the R76 and pushed into a roadside bush down an embankment. Where it eventually came to rest was nearly 50 metres from the roadway,” he said.

“Medics faced a considerable challenge of darkness and the need to locate all the patients, some of whom were missing after being flung from the wreckage.

McKenzie said they combed the area and set up a lighting system to illuminate the scene and managed to account for everyone who was travelling in the truck.

He added that a man and woman had sustained critical injuries and had died as a result before paramedics arrived.

“The pair was declared dead at the scene. It is unclear at this stage if they had been seated on the back of the truck. The remaining injured were treated and stabilised at the roadside and then transported by ambulance to medical facilities in the area for the urgent care that they required,” McKenzie said.
