Durban - A woman was seriously injured and had to be freed from the wreckage of her vehicle by firefighters using the Jaws of Life on the R61 in Margate early on Tuesday morning.

This after the bakkie she was travelling in had overturned and rolled repeatedly before coming to rest on an embankment.

Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha said that the accident had occurred at approximately 02:00, and that the cause of the crash was not yet clear.

“Exact detail to the cause of the accident is still speculative and will remain a subject for police investigation,” he said.

“Netcare911 paramedics and the fire department arrived at the scene and found a woman still trapped in the twisted frame of the vehicle. Firemen used the Jaws of Life to free the seriously injured patient while medics worked fervently to stabilise her,” Botha said.

“After the patient was extricated and skilfully immobilised on a trauma board, they transported her to a local hospital for the care that she required,” he added.
