KZN farmer attacked while asleep

2013-03-15 07:24

Pietermaritzburg - An elderly farmer was attacked in his sleep at home in Skitsdrift near Winterton by four men in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The man was assaulted and robbed. He suffered a head injury.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed the incident.

“A case of house robbery and assault has been opened for investigation … they [the robbers] took some of the items in the house and fled in their getaway vehicle. No arrests have been made, and investigations are continuing.”

Koos Marais of the Kwanalu security desk said they were concerned about farm attacks in the province.

“We are concerned about the spread of farm attacks in the province. Government should increase police visibility in the rural areas,” he said.

In jhb this happens multiple time every day. Why does make news when it's a farm?

      kobus.hattingh.5 - 2013-03-15 07:39

Because farm attacks/murders have become the national sport of this sick country with its deaf and blind president and his entourage! :(

      Hajira Singh - 2013-03-15 07:40

Who is responsible for these viscious attacks? Why is there so much racism in South Africa?

      Henk Van Biljon - 2013-03-15 07:42

It happens on more farms than what is reported too. Normally it is only the local communities that get the news. If all the attacks and murders were in news24 we would have had a separate newspaper just for that.

      PointBlank - 2013-03-15 08:24

Because they are mostly elderly people..

      Tuyez - 2013-03-15 08:30

Waffling here doesnt help because peopling who do these thing dont read news or news24. Most of them are illiterate. They attack farmers and other valnarable people black and white. I dont think they attack farmers because of the colour of their skin. It because they are easy target for them as they are isolated from the places of rescue. Think about this you have heard of a blackman who has his job family and responsible person that he has rob or high jack someone. People who mostly do crimes are low life people who dont have anything better to do for their lives. They happen to be black because blacks are a majority in this country and generally poor. So what ever they do they are not doing for people of their kind. Get that in your heard. And please people read all the articles not when it involves farm attach. People of all colour fall prey of crime. Unless you are obssessed with racial hatred then you will hate blacks. Criminals dont even make 5 % of black population they are just a minority as you think you are.

      Shawon Tiltman - 2013-03-15 08:51

well said tuyez. but all murderers assaults should be put on the news not just the farmers. ..then people can see just how poorly the government is doing when it comes to crime. ....

      Tuyez - 2013-03-15 09:05

You are absolutely correct Shawon. Government is failing everyone in most aspects. Racially Dividing ourselves further doesnt help the situation.

      Gieljam Gomtor - 2013-03-15 10:11

Ask this question again once your stomach thinks your throat is cut due to no food to buy.

      lois.lloyd.1238 - 2013-03-15 10:55

Your thinking is the same as the Minister of Police.

      Sue Potgieter - 2013-06-24 09:25

because they are our food source!!! How many farmers have been attacked and murdered this year alone? Govt should be doing EVERYTHING in their power to protect farmers or our supermarket shelves will be as empty as Zims very soon. Oh wait, govt will probably import chinese food for us.

      Rocky Bloubal - 2013-10-16 18:42

Simple my dear David - so that you and your family may leave the unsafe suburbs of JHB and go settle on a farm in KZN...

  • Emmanuel Roodt - 2013-03-15 07:32

It's time the government start protecting the people of South Africa. Isn't this why we pay taxes? If we are not protected then we should start asking for a refund on our tax money. What say you SOUTH AFRICA? Yes or No?

      PointBlank - 2013-03-15 08:25

The cops are too busy dragging their heels and people to do anything more.

  • Keegan Moodley - 2013-03-15 07:32

Come now, stop the violence and crime. No farmers,no food and no food, you go home hungry because this is baby back bull s--t

the brave warrior race - attacking an old man in his sleep........shjoe!

  • JannieDeVos - 2013-03-15 07:32

If this is mere robbery, why the excessive brutality? Especially when it involves the defenseless elderly.

      Bless Boswell - 2013-03-15 08:25

      Because they can ...

      phillys.winterbottom - 2013-03-15 08:59

payback Jannie, also severe frustration of not having any of the promises made to them by the cANCer to secure their vote being realized. Also with a low IQ , impressionable people will tend to take their leaders utterances quite literally ( "whites are all criminals", "they stole our land" , "Kill the Boer", etc etc). This all taken together starts creating a volatile cocktail of violence and anger, and with the careful help of the criminal ANC , is lovingly steered towards the "so called" minority "privileged" groupings, and hence the anger is taken out on them instead. To keep the fire burning of course, you continue as the party in government to make reference to "apartheid", "colonialism", race, etc etc, and of course shutting down the commando system in the rural areas obviously speeds up the process of driving the "white " farmers off the land!!!

      Tersia Louw - 2013-03-15 09:01

      ... and they want to.

  • Colin Taylor - 2013-03-15 07:33

Typical... 4 young men vs an elderly man while he sleeps... Frikken cowards. There are stronger words I would like to use, however this is a public forum so I will refrain from using them, BUT you know what I'm thinking as I'm not the only one getting sick of this... Enough is enough....

  • Bless Boswell - 2013-03-15 07:35

How cowardly is that? Attacking an elderly man in his sleep when he has no chance of defending himself. How proud our president must be of his safe country, where citizens can sleep in peace. Oh but wait, he's just spent R167m on security for his "palace" - I wonder why?

  • Coen Venter - 2013-03-15 07:43

  • David King - 2013-03-15 07:43

we must close the borders and export all these illegal immigrants its unfair that the good people in the country look bad, other wise our useless govt need to bring back the death penalty

      johan.mostert.967 - 2013-03-15 08:30

It is not just illegal immigrants that commit these attacks, I'll rather look more in the 'government sponsor' direction. Why did the ANC government dismantled the Commando System? Why did the ANC fought so hard to sing their instigating songs? Why are there so many police officers been caught involving in farm attacks? Why did the ANC worked so hard to disarm the farmers? Why do the ANC refuse to let the police indicate the attacks as farm murders?

  • Willie Olivier - 2013-03-15 07:46

Maybe our government is not capable to protect us. Maybe it's time to ask UN security counsel to help us!

      Theodor Herzl - 2013-03-15 07:58

      Yanga Maroloma - 2013-03-15 08:07

NO Willie, this is Not DRC or Sudan!! SA can solve its problems, thank you very much for your imprerialistic idea.

      Lwazi Sithole - 2013-03-15 08:36

@Willie - hahahahaha... NO! the UN is not a police force

      Theo Schoeman - 2013-03-15 08:37

@Yanga Maroloma - Do you honestly believe SA can solve its own problems under the current dispensation ? Keep on day dreaming - good luck Lol

      Tersia Louw - 2013-03-15 09:05

Yanga - "SA can solve its problems". That's great news! How and when can we expect the problems to be solved, and by whom?

      Yanga Maroloma - 2013-03-15 10:35

@Theo, it can happen. @Tersia, BY YOU!! 'Be the change you wish to see in the world' no government alone can overcomes racial driven hatred, as this is probably is. Start by loving people, see people as people not animals, respect people, be fair to people, treat people right, dnt look down on people. If that can be done firstly at personal level, then these scums who kill ppl in their sleep would be motivated no more. Farmers are sometimes very aggressive and abusive, sometimes I said, so that behaivor can perpetuate these incidents. I also live in a farm area, I always hear how ppl talk about harsh treatments they are receiving and how one day they will open up someone's stomach with whatever object. All iam saying is; Let's love one another first, we won't have to form Commandos if we do. And iam also waiting for BEE to buy me a farm, so iam a Pro_Farmers, these criminals acts are also affecting me.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2013-03-15 11:38

Yanga Maroloma. South Africa can only solve its problems when it has a capable, honest government. Can you predict when that will be?,

  • trevor.pietersen.3 - 2013-03-15 07:51

  • Phillip Joubert - 2013-03-15 07:56

As been said our borders is open to all and it seems the AFRICAN NATIONAL CRiMINAL COVERMENT is not in a position to protect this countree any more. if you open the news murder here murder there and which CRIMINAl country's name come up ZIMBABWE. They do not have any rights here. They deserve to be killed on site if found killing any South African Citizan's

      BikoGuevaraHaniX - 2013-03-15 08:51

@PhillipJ - I must agree, the borders need to be closed and secured, as a start

  • Duncan Gill - 2013-03-15 08:04

Go to and you will find out the true report updated weekly as to the situation regarding farm attacks! The Government secretly like what is going on as this is an acting out revenge for what happened in the past.don't expect them to do anything..remember they disbanded the farm commandos whose were created to prevent this type of behavior..this genocide will be taken to world forums and this ANC government will be taken to account for what they have allowed to happen!

      BikoGuevaraHaniX - 2013-03-15 08:52

@Dunkie - you're smoking your socks!! "Genocide" really? you have read too many Nazi propaganda booklets.

      Silvia Van Eck - 2013-03-15 10:42

@Biko, Unfortunately it's true. Here is a link to the international organisation and the list of countries that are affected. Sa features quite high on this!

  • Sue-rita Fortuin - 2013-03-15 08:18

word die land dan nou zimbabwe dat hulle dan nou soe die farmers attack.

  • Khethu Ndlovu - 2013-03-15 08:26

Ive sadly notice that a particular racial group in our country is as incapable of standing up and showing this govt that enough is enough, the only action they will ever take is running to their computers and sant here in news24 and then wait for another atrocity to happen and respond on the same manner, again n again. Is it working? When other racial group stand up and want to take this govt on, they are called all sorts of names. Who is stupid here?

      Shawon Tiltman - 2013-03-15 08:30

well you brought it up so take a good look in the mirror the answer is looking at you..Jack.

      Yanga Maroloma - 2013-03-15 10:15

Lols Ja Mr Ndlovu! When we DEMONSTRATE our FRUSTRATIONS by burning a few buildings we are called names. They should also start demonstrations, its the only way the bourgeoisie of this land can listen to them. This NEWS24 militia is cowardness!!

  • Frans Delport - 2013-03-15 08:26

Think we should investigate these farm attacks deeply, from the perpetrators to the chiefs right through to the main chain of command! Wonder who sits behind it, clearly planned and executed(military style) to precision.

  • Ephraim Le-Nation - 2013-03-15 08:29

stop attacking the farmers, you are minimizing my chances of dating a white chick!!!!

      BikoGuevaraHaniX - 2013-03-15 08:54

hahahahahaha... but this is of course diabolic

      AgSies Man - 2013-03-15 09:11

  • Lwazi Sithole - 2013-03-15 08:34

that's sad. people need jobs, people need work, people need income, thats the only way to lower crime. I and 99% of employed people wit ha decent income see no reason to rob and steal. Because we have an income, we sleep with a 'healthy' meal in our stomachs, our children don't cry from hunger.

      Tersia Louw - 2013-03-15 09:09

I get the "need" for theft, but I don't understand the excessive violence and, too often, death, handed out to people who can't fight back, like the elderly.

  • Lee De Marco - 2013-03-15 08:35

I am glad that we are beginning to see that farm murders are not special in comparison to the crime that happens in the rest of the country. ALL of it is horrific and its impacts on all races alike. Crime impacts on all of us - when we start saying that one race group is more important than the other it dims the credibility of saying that crime is out of control. If we have one voice, the government cant give stupid excuses and non-committal responses

  • Mandy Tilma - 2013-03-15 08:46

Farmers WAKE UP - start turning things around - you are dealing with SAVAGES... Get armed and start killing these bastards. Cant you see its not about robbery, you are being erradicated one by one by one. Have no mercy they dont have any for you. Fight fight fight for you lives... from an ex zimbo...

  • Siphiwo Khuzwayo - 2013-03-15 08:48

Some prefer to call this, a racist attack. I differ, I call it, an attack on one of our citizens, which is unacceptable. These attacks, happen almost in every corner of SA randomly seeking no colour of skin. We need all of us, as citizens, to come together and defeat this scourge and I know, we can if we all stand together as one Nation against crime.

      Michael Hawthorne - 2013-03-15 08:52

I agree but there are farm murder which motive was not robbery but brutally killing white people all of this need to be addressed across the board. All rural people need the cammando system reinstated

      Gareth Deeble - 2013-03-15 14:51

      Well said

  • Ndangah-Brumilda Shedni Mmberegeni - 2013-03-15 09:23

I totaly feel sory for them, it is not easy for a police to rush with police van to the farm, in nothern cape, farms are 120km ,85km,75,km,from the police station,or nearest town, you will go to the farm you find out that the gate at the farm is locked, nd the house is 5km from te gate, you must have main power to go to robbery in the farm, and you must know farms are having gravel road,

  • ANASKA - 2013-03-15 09:32

Zuma when is it going to get thru your thick skull that there is a HUGE PROBLEM when it comes to farms attacks ALL OVER SOUTH AFFRICA - SHAME ON YOU - stick your head in the sand!! - you are a DISASTER of a President

  • Leonard Mokgotlhwe - 2013-03-15 10:42

Pay your worker R105 a day this attacks will stop

      Jimmy Don - 2013-03-15 10:51

Ok numbskull, so according to your logic it’s ok to attack (murder in most cases) someone just because you are poor and underpaid. Let’s say the farmer pays the worker R105 a day from hence forward, next year the worker demands R200 a day and the cycle continues, not rocket science is it? You see how flawed your argument is?

      dave.dowling.758 - 2013-03-15 10:53

      You're smoking your socks Leonard

      Tuyez - 2013-03-15 14:34

Four men attack an elderly man. Is this their take on bravery?

  • Thomas George Loeser - 2013-03-15 12:51

someone made the comment " because they are mostly elderly people " Is that not a concern within itself? Where are the young farmers?

  • Mark Baker - 2013-03-16 08:05

Seems to me that a case of attempted murder or at the very least GBH should be opened, not common assault.

  • fourtyfour.para - 2013-03-16 10:41

Are there any black people in South Africa who don't think that it is right to kill white people (farmers/settlers - or whatever else you want to label them)???????

  • Dan Moore - 2013-03-17 20:08

At this rate SA will become Zimbabwe you will have no farmers and have to import all of your food so sad. No prison for these criminals death by public stoning.

  • Patrick Stringer - 2013-03-18 08:01

Please, this is not a violent country, the 100% Zulu boy says its only some folks painting a bleak picture and fabricating all these horrible things that happen on a daily basis, that why there is a big bunker under his country home just to store the canned food in for him and his many wifes

  • Nben Wang - 2013-05-23 23:04

I want to thank you all for talking about this and for being so passionate about it. I'd not realised it had touched so many of you; This "elderly farmer" is my father. And it doesn't matter what you think about the government or about race or poverty. It doesn't matter what you think about the god you serve or the possible reasons why. The only thing you think when this is you, is how damn lucky you are that he is alive. Let's make the work of cowards few and the deeds of courage many. Amandla.
